1997 gmc k2500 4+4 automatic transmission only has reverc and low

Sounds like Speed Sensor problems .
Trans is in "limp mode " .
I had a 97 K2500 do the same thing .

Usually you pull the trans for this job, but BE SURE that the rear main seal is the issue. Everything that leaks shows up in that area.

Yes 4L60E is what all 97 jimmys came out with.,, It is a Electronic transmission.

1997 GMC Jimmy, Won't go into reverse,but all other gears work,ok.

Check the automatic transmission fluid color.

It should be lite pink and there is ZERO odor of burn friction material.

TOP OFF is it's low on ATF

Have some one the check on the reverse light when you put the truck into the reverse gear.

NO reverse lights then the neutral safety is falling.

=====

Check for free play on the gear lever. Pay close attention on the transmission end.

USE clear to remove excess dirt.

Inspect transmission pan and the floor for ATF leak.

If they are both 4L60Es' then yes. I know the 96 1500 does but you didn't state what size the 97 is. And are they both 4X4?

Transmission and idle

the first it sounds like a clogged fuel filter or a vacuum leak or a leak at the intake manifold gasket and the idle speed control is incorrect.
the transmission it maybe low on fluid or need a tranny service: new fluid and filter

Transmission wont go into secound gear just stopped, still goes in first and reverce

check your fuses. I had the same prob. and it was the gauges fuse.
