Low voltage to the Throttle Body unit causes this problem along with a dirty buttery fly . Have the throttle body cleaned asper Jaguar cars service spec and replace the throttle body motor relay located in the engine compartment center row 2nd back . Then dissconnect the battery for 30 minutes and reconnect .

SOURCE: engine stalls after cold start-up & release from high speed idle

I had a similar problem.  I found the filter cartridge below the pcv valve had carboned up, and after the crank case pressurized, oil was forced out the pcv supply line to the throttle body.  The idle air control valve solenoid got oil in it and caused my problem, but only when it was cold.  The pcv cartridge is accessed by removing the pcv valve and the rubber fitting that the pcv valve mounts in.  It can then be fished out with a pick set, and it is a pain because you can't see it, but you can get you hand back there.  I hope this helps you.

SOURCE: Noisy engine idle and stutter at low or high speed

I had the same problem (X-type 2.0d 2004). The stutter was cured on mine by getting the ECU fashed with the latest firmware. This is a known problem and the update does cure it (£28), I didn't bother with all the tests the garage wanted to.
The noisey engine at idle is the alternator belt. It resonates at idle and causes the noise, There is a modified bottom pulley, tensioner and belt kit, but it is rather expensive ~£200 plus fitting (around 4 hours labour). Mondeo's have the same problem but that kit doesn't fit the Jag.
Hope this helps

SOURCE: Low idle speed problem!

You probably disturbed the timing between the crankshaft and the camshaft if you loosened the timing belt.

SOURCE: High idle speed when the engine is cold

The high idle speed at start up is normal. As the engine temperature increases, the engine idle should kick down automatically. Insofar as the emissions results, if there were a problem, the check engine light should be on. If it is, take the car to an autoparts store and have the fault codes read. Most parts stores will perform the scan for free. If the check engine light is not on, and the idle question was all you were worried about, you are good to go! Hope this helped and best wishes.

If it is an auto then it is possible it is idling to high and the trans is still engaged despite you foot being off the peddle. Try lowering the idol speed as a first resort.

Do you have any codes? If so, what are they?
If not, this could be a mechanical problem with either the torque converter itself or some sort of stuck valve in the valve body inside the transmission.
I just replaced the valve body in my wife's 1999 Mercury Sable and it cleared up a number of problems she was having with shifting and torque converter lock up.
I hope this helps.
Good Luck!

Still searching the right answer on Jag S TYPE- HIGH RPM PROBLEM - RPM won't pull back when foot taken off accelerator when coasting. RPM will match the running speed of vehicle. and stay the

Hi Richard, I'm not an expert on Jags, just a little jealous I don't have one. Looks like a very nice vehicle. Have a close look, inspecting all hoses and vacuum pipes on the intake manifold side of the engine for any damage or loose fitting. The problem seems to be a leakage of air which is raising the idle speed. Regards John

Car won't pull back speed when foot off accelerator

Very possibly a vacuum issue. Maybe a line that needs vacuum for the trans is on an inlet that effects the throttle. Not sure how old your vehicle is.

Engine wont back off speed when foot taken off accelerator

Jaguar has a cleaning procedure for these cars . The TBI needs to be cleaned and the throttle body relay needs to be changed /replaced. I am sure the Yellow ck engine light is on with a throttle motor code in the PCM

General rules of thumb: Low speed engine on acceleration with smoke in the exhaust plume = worn piston rings High speed engine accelerating (spooled up turbo) with smoke = oil form turbo bearing and/or piston rings Engine on over run (coasting down, foot off the gas) with smoke = oil from valve guides. VW/Audi make good engines with tight tolerances so none of the above should apply at 62K miles; just make sure that the oil (the right oil) and oil filter are changed regularly.

My xj6 runs at high rpms and accelerates on its own

None of those possible problems have anything to do with idle speed. The first thing might be a very weak throttle return spring. The next would be a sticky throttle cable or foot feed pedal that isn't moving freely. Another possibility is a vacuum leak somewhere. Did changing the spark plug in #1 cylinder help the misfire? If not, you may have a partially plugged injector. Fixing the misfire will only increase idle speed some more. Look for an idle speed motor near the throttle body that is supposed to raise idle speed when the engine is cold and lower it back when the engine warms up. Check to see if it is holding the speed too high. If the throttle position sensor tells the computer where the idle speed motor is set, then it could have an effect on idle speed if the sensor is bad. The position sensor is just a fancy potentiometer. Hope some of this helps.
