This car is equipped with Passlock antitheft security by GM. You dont have a chip, but there is a transponder in the key head. This system is known to fail. The fact that the security light is on proves the failure of the Passlock and why it wont run. The hard part is finding out which part of the passlock system has failed. Read this link for info and DO IT YOURSELF solutions to the problem.

Yes, the system is called Passlock, and malfunctions regularly. Go to this link for an explanation of how it works, plus some tricks and tips on how to reset it, or bypass it.

1998 GMC Safari van won't start.

Check your switch that runs to your aternator.make sure is grounded .if not get a sand paper and sand it down.also check the switch that plugs in to the alternator.

93 gmc safari odometer stopped working, then started again, then turns over but won't start.

It could be a bad fuse or a bad fuel pump not providing fuel for the car. It could also be an issue with the timing belt.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

95 gmc sierra won't hold steady rpm

Sounds like wiring problems with the engine harness.
The oil pressure not working could cause the hard starting problem.
The idle problem could be a faulty idle air control valve or a vac leak.
I would start with the check engine light and find out what the codes are.

Won't start

A mechanic would check for power at the starter, the neutral safety switch, and the key switch. If the security light in the cluster is on, you could have a problem with the chip in the key or the sensor in the lock cylinder.
