Shift indicator lights are all on

When I start my car the shift indicator lights are fine but with in a few seconds the light indicator lights switch to all solid. Sometimes this occurs right when I shift. My VW Jetta has automatic and tap shift, when the light become solid I am not able to read when I shift in automatic nor when I shift tap shift. No issues with Transmission shifts or shifting in general. Please someone help me.

Might just be indicating a fault in TCM, have vehicle scanned.

SOURCE: Transmission won't shift fron 1st, 2nd or 3rd correctly!

I'm no expert but it sounds as if you might have some moisture (water) contaminating your tranny fluid. I'd first try having it drained, flushed and refilled with fresh fluid. Preferably after it has been warmed to room temperature - -2 brrr.

SOURCE: 97 VW Jetta automatic trans not shifting without lifting off gas

The tranny's are notorious for having "small" problems before they actually let go. However, there is a sensor on the transmission that tells it when to shift as well as a couple of air and cooling sensors. Try having those tested/changed and see if that helps. If not, you may be looking at a new transmission

SOURCE: How do I repair the gear shift?

Locate where the shift cable linkage mount to trans, check for good tight attachment to ball socket, then have some one move shift lever through gears watch to see if cable moves shift arm BOTH directions if not replace cable

Testimonial: "Thanks! It is the cable and as soon as the parts store is open I can get a replacement. Happy holidays! Juliann Turner"

SOURCE: 1998 vw beetle automatic transmission hard shifts

There is an electrical malfunction in the EV5 solenoid electrical circuit. You must go to Advance Auto or Autozone and borrow their scan tool and get the code.

When shift indicator light blinks off transmission miss shifts

The light indicates a fault has occurred in the transmission or the electronic control sensors and actuators. You need the dealer to scan the transmission control module (TCM) to see what fault code is stored and then based on that code perform diagnostics and repair the transmission.

My chevy tahoe shift indicator comes from reverse 2 drive and the reverse lights still be on for a few seconds trying to find the location of thee shift indicator relay

their is no relay only a range switch which is located on the drivers side of the trans. sandwiched behind the shift cable lever, it has two plugs that plug into the rear of it, these switches are susceptible to water intrusion, I have replaced many of them

there is a sensor on the tranny called nsbu neutral saftery back up switch. this tells the computer what gear the tranny is in when to shift, and controls the indicator lights get it fixed before you damage the tranny

Transmission gear change

First question: Are your brake lights working? I'm fairly certain that on the Metro the brake light actuator switch is also the switch that disables the safety shift. If your brake light actuator switch doesn't work, you won't be able to shift, in other words.
Second: If the switch is working and you have brake lights, look for physical damage to the shift linkage under the vehicle. Note if it is bent, broken, has scuff marks that might indicate damage to it or such. If the shift linkage does not _appear_ broken, but you still can't shift, you should check for a broken wire or bad connection in a wire between the brake actuator switch and the shift safety at the shift lever. It's about 99% likely that one of these three things will be the solution to your problem.
