95 vw golf 1.8 manual tranny
almost every morning i start the car and the speedo/tach works... they will continue to work as long as the car is running. once i turn the car off and start it again my speedo/tach will not work (sometimes they may, but most of the time they wont) If the car sits for an hour or more, they usually work again. I never loose the speedo/tach while driving and the two always work or dont, together. Is the problem with the "sending unit" or somewhere in the dash? why do they never quit working while the car is running?

this could be a ground wire issue ...look carefully for loose or corroded wire to frame under dash black usually near harness under instrument cluster

if you replaced the speedo sensor and gear, the problem is the gear that drives the speedo gear. it is on the differential and is only replaceable by removing and disassembling transmission. this is somewhat common on vw's. the only other possibility is the wiring but i'd say its about a 95% chance you have a bad drive gear on the differential.

Had same problem with my 2000 dodge stratus 2.4 liter and transmission would not shift out of 1st gear. Solution was ignition fuse under the hood was blown, one side of fuse working, replaced 10 am fuse everything works, tach, speedometer, gas gauge and transmission started back to shifting.

Start by checking the wiring to the VSS (sensor) . Plug has 3 wires. One of the outside wires should have 12 volts when ignition on. Other outside wire should have an earth of no more than 5 ohms impedance. Centre wire should give an earth pulse when gearbox is turning. If live and earth are good, but no pulse, then sensor or its drive gear is broken. Problem is usually sensor suffering ppor earth connection. Ok to cut earth wire before sensor and atach to sutable earth point.

I have the same problem but it seems to just decide randomly when to work and when not to. But just as yours, it never stops working while the car is running.
I have that same problem on my 97 Golf. Has anyone fixed this?
My 1995 Golf III (2.0L Automatic trans) does the same - works then doesn't but it will switch on and off during driving. I took it into the Volkswagen dealer and they quoted me a price for the whole new unit - (with installation) $745
Whew..!! I think I'll live with it until I buy a new car unless I find a DIY solution!
