I would like to know why that happened?
Plug the right upper vent on the dash above the radio. If cool air begins to blow on the driver side, the evaporator core is blocked with debris.

First check the coolant level in the radiator. Check your heater core hoses on the firewall underneath the hood. Let the car come up to temp. and feel the two hoses. If only one of them is getting hot you may have bad heater core or a bad heater control valve.

the most probabale cause of this would be a disfunctional hear core if you replace your heater your heater will more than likley work the the way it's supposed to

It sounds like your electronic vent actuator has gone bad, it's common to go bad and may need to be replaced. There are tinny gears that wear out and the vent actuator stops working. You can try this, turn the radio off first so you don't have to enter the reset code to activate your radio. Disconnect the battery for 30 seconds and reconnect it, if the actuator has lost it's base line and stuck in the open heat position, this will reset it, just make sure the setting is to cold and off before disconnecting and reconnecting the battery. If this does not work, then it's a bad actuator and Auto Zone should have the part you need and will have the step by step instructions for you to the job you self, I believe the dealer is a $415,00 repair cost for this. Have you checked the coolant level? What you describe is exactly what happens if the coolant level is low. When stopped at idle, hot coolant is not circulating through the heater core, so no heat. As the engine increases in rpm's when you pull away from the light, the water pump is spinning quicker, and some coolant is making it to the heater core. So check the level, and if it is low, keep an eye on it to see if it drops again. That of course indicates a leak somewhere. Get it fixed, as overheating the engine leads to costly repairs and worse case a new engine. Let me know how you make out with this.

My mechanic friend and I discovered that the caliber we serviced blew hot air at the driver but cool not cold at the passenger. Turns out this car had half the evaporator core plugged with debris due to a rodent and lack of replacing the cabin air filter. I found a video on you tube in Spanish and you can easily see it's a common problem on the caliber. In this case, the blend door actuator was not faulty. It was debris.
