I had the same problem with my blazer, check your tires. If the tread on one or more tires is different, you need to change all 4. I changed only 2 at a time, the front tires would rotate faster than the rear, which would case the gears in the transfer case to bind up and not easily release. When mine did disengage, I would hear a bang and the whole truck would shake. About a year after that, the rear end went out, most likely because of pressure and heat.

Many things, first check the vacuum hoses underneath the batery rack to make sure there are no kinks, if thats ok, check the oil levels in both the transfer case and front diff, if that's ok, you'll have to check the fork system on the front diff, and also something real stupid put ignition on shift to neutral and press 4 low then 4 hi and see what it does, if stuck in 4 low it will make like a clutch slipping sound but i've seen it stuck and make no noise cause you really have to go through neutral to in and out of 4 low.... good luck

Transfer case, front axels, front differential??

With 4wd vehicles most important that all tyre sizes are the same,if circumference differs too much you will get binding up between diffs.

When u push the 4 wheel drive button the transfer case engages but the front axle does not engage

Pull the battery box out, there will be a plunger with a cable hooked to it,pull the cable and the front axle should engage.

Have a gmc 2005 sierra the 4x4 doesn't work. when I press the 4x4 button blinks a few times, and then makes like grinding sounds,it sounds that is coming from transfer case, but never engage and ligth goes...

Not good! there is a sensor in your transfer case that senses that you are now in four wheel drive if your transfer case does not lock in it will set a code and the light will flash and default back to two wheel drive. check the fluid level in the transfer case and front differential for a sign of internal failure. that is causing the grinding sound.

I have a 1999 blazer zr2 with the 4.3 vortec OK now hears the problem to day when i was driveing in the snow i had to use the 4wd so i stopped and hit the 4wd button and it clicked and sounded like it...

Sound crazy, but alot recommendations say thet when you pass from Hi to Lo must insure that you have foot on the brake pedal.

Loss of vacuum engages the front hubs; other for no 4 wheel drive and no indicator light. Go home pulled all the fuses that had to do with the 4 wheel drive system, put them back in and 4 wheel seems to work fine now. And no there were no blown fuses.

I recently had same case and it was a bad electric motor on the transfer case (31000 miles). The 4x4 light wouldn't even light up or engage so I would lean towards it being something different on your end.
Also, could be the actuator pin or w/e the little plastic piece is that engages the 4LO might be broke, or maybe a couple of other things.

Keep us updated.

I have 98 blaser 4.3 popped in 4x4 by its self now it won't go back in 2hi

does the switch respond to 4 whl and 2 whl? if so there is a vacuum switch on the transfer case that maybe bad and sending vacuum to the actuator under the battery and tray that pulls the axle into 4 whl drive. i would check that first it is common to go bad. good luck

I have simaliar problem my 4 wheel drive on my 89 s10

I would check transfer case for an electronic solenoid that engages the front driveline Don't know if they have a separate cicuit in fuse box but worth a check. A repair manual could be of help and determine if you have a bad solenoid or wiring problem.

Warning light for 4 whl dr is on

Hitman, check for a wire on the transfer case attached to something like a oil pressure sending unit. If that wire is off or grounded out it could cause the light to stay on. You also need to check and make sure if it is electronic controlled 4wd that it is actually disengaged.
