Car will accelerate briefly then bog down. Engines seems fine until you drive it. Black smoke coming out tailpipe. Car has 191,000 miles but ran fine up until having the exhaust manifold replaced. The mechanic seems confused.

Take it to an Autozone or O'Reillys and they will test the computer for you. It should have set a code, but you don't know if the code light works so its your best bet. Sounds like it is running rich and the crankshaft module is not advancing the timing.

More than likely it is coming from the intake manifold. You can use a pressure tester that hooks to the radiator and use a flashlight and mirror to get a better look at where it is coming from.

Black smoke is usually unburned fuel. P0171 reads bank 1 system too lean. There isn't one answer. You need to dig further and inspect your cars fuel system, from the pump to the injectors. Because of the mileage you may want to start off with a compression test just to see where you stand with the motor. write back if you have any other questions.

sorry to inform you that the cylinder head gasket needs to be replaced or you have a cracked cylinder head.......either repair is expensive
