I have a 1999 Mercury Villager. The van rpm idles high before the van jerks hard into second gear. I checked the resistance on both the VSS and TPS and all checked good. I get a fault code P1705 for the neutral safty switch; however, would this cause the tranny to **** so hard? I checked to see if the van would only start in Park and Neutral--that checked o.k.. The fluid service level is good. The tranny runs fine after the hard shift into second; it doesn't fluctuate or anything. This problem just happened all of a sudden. I don't know what to do next without spending a whole lot of money. If anyone can help, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

I have the same problem with my 99 Villager Estate. To get around it I try to park where I can coast a little before putting it in gear. This just prevents the transmission from getting slamed into gear. It only does this on a cold start. After it has fully warmed up there is no problem. It seems like the idle is too high when trying to shift.
I haven't found a solution yet.
If you have any other ideas, I'm all ears.

Changed the TPS. Van runs great.
I made the adjustment to the old TPS and hoped it would work; however, when I had no clue what to do next with little money, I got a TPS from the junk yard and adjusted according to the maintenance instruction manual. Shifts nice.
