Yes, you do. Also be sure and set the engine at TDC of compression stroke of # 1 cylinder. Remove crank bolt and pulley, remove timing cover...you may also have to remove the front engine mount to get the cover off. Use a jack and a piece of wood under the oil pan to hold the engine up.

SOURCE: 1999 Tercel. Timing belt/water pump interval change?

Hello tinaromano1: The factory specification are to replace the belt every 90,000 miles in severe service. I would recommend to replace at 90,000 no matter what the service would be. Keep in mind should the belt break there is always a chance engine damage may occur. Should you need further help just ask. Thank You for using FixYa. Roger

SOURCE: 1999 Tercel. Timing belt interval change - calendar limit?

Assume that an average driver does between 10-15K per year. If recommendation is 90K, then average change interval in years should be seven to eight years. Driving is not the only thing that causes the belt to fail...as with any rubber item, the rubber hardens over time (dry rot) and will begin to crack.
This can often be seen on old tires that have hard rubber compounds (such as perelli) cracks appear in sidewalls about an inch from wheel. Your belt is not a tire, but the rubber reacts the same way!
Some people say you can leave the timing belt on for up to 140-150K. I would never do this on anything I owned and would therefore not recommend anyone else do it. (even though it's expensive, it's less than a new engine}

SOURCE: Toyota tercel 1998 How to

The best way to get this procedure is to acquire a repair manual for that vehicle -- Pep Boys or similar will likely have one.

SOURCE: To change the oil pan gasket in a 93 Tercel

Stock the car doesn't come with an oil pan gasket but you can order one from rockauto.com you don't have to remove the A/C compressor for any of the jobs you listed. If you want to change the timing belt you need to remove the plastic rock guard under the motor on the passenger side. remove the spark plugs and using the socket turn the engine from the crankshaft clockwise until you are at TDC on #1 cyclinder. (compression stroke) Next remove the upper and lower plastic timing belt covers. The idler pulley is the one with the spring. Loosen the nut and remove the spring then you can remove the timing belt. It really isn't that hard to do. Maybe one afternoon.

Toyota tercel 1988, when installing the distributer. How do you ensure proper timing with cam

Usually if you put the distributor back in without turning the crankshaft, you can line up the rotor with the correct plug wire. They generally will only go in two ways, on the mark or 180 degrees off.
The timing marks on the crank are used to check base timing.
If you put the dist in and then turn the crank to line up the marks on the damper, you can tell if the rotor is pointing to the correct plug wire.

Is there a timing belt or gear on a 1986 toyota tercel

Timing belt for sure.If there is a plastic cover on the front of the engine behind the drive belts then its a timing belt and not a chain.

My 1988 toyota tercel ez while driving to the mail box, it just died, and I had to pull it home. I can smell fuel, but I see no spark. why would this happen all at onece. It was running good.

Sounds like the timing belt broke or has spun teeth. To check that to the following: Remove the disrtibutor cap and then have someone crank the engine while you watch the distributor rotor.
If the rotor is turning the timing belt is still good. If not then that's your problem. You need a new timing belt.
