My grand am wont start even after waiting ten minutes due to the security system delay. Initially after waiting ten minutes it would start, now Im waiting an additional ten minute period as much as three consecutive times before it finally starts. What is the problem? How do I fix this issue? Please help.
Taking the vehicle to a qualified repair shop that has the diagnostic scanner that can read DTC'S - diagnostic trouble code's stored that would point to the problem . Nothing you can do ,unless you have a factory or a professional type scan tool ,an factory service repair information for the diagnostic procedure for any code's found stored . Do you know what a factory service repair manual is ?
The Passlock™ System is provided in order to prevent vehicle theft if the ignition lock cylinder is forced to rotate or the ignition switch is operated while separated from the ignition lock cylinder case. If starting is attempted without authorization from the Passlock™ System, the powertrain control module (PCM) will disable engine starting. Start disable may be in the form of fuel disable or starter disable, depending on engine application.
The components of the Passlock™ System are as follows:
• The ignition lock cylinder and key
• The ignition lock cylinder case, including the Passlock™ sensor
• The ignition switch
• The body control module (BCM)
• The security indicator on the instrument cluster
• The powertrain control module (PCM)
Ignition Lock Cylinder Case, Including the Passlock™ Sensor
The ignition lock cylinder fits inside the ignition lock cylinder case and operates the ignition switch when turned by a key with the proper mechanical cut. When the ignition key is used to turn the ignition lock cylinder to crank, start, a magnet on the lock cylinder passes close to the Passlock™ sensor within the ignition lock cylinder case. The magnet activates the security hall effect sensor in the Passlock™ sensor which completes a circuit from the security sensor signal circuit through a resistor to the security sensor low reference circuit. The resistance value will vary from vehicle to vehicle.
If a magnet from outside of the ignition lock cylinder case is used to attempt to steal the vehicle, the tamper hall effect sensor will be activated. This completes a circuit from the security sensor signal circuit through a tamper resistor to the security sensor low reference circuit bypassing the security resistor. If the ignition switch is forced to rotate without the correct key, or if the ignition lock cylinder is removed by force, the Passlock™ sensor will be damaged and will not operate.
These are dignostic trouble code's for the anti-theft system .

Do you know what a diagnostic flow chart is ? There are SEPARATE diagnostic procedures for each . Going at a repair blindly will fix nothing .
This site shows a solution for $250, from a reliable manufacturer called newrockies. Your grand am is covered in their list of cars that their module works on.
website is called: vatspasslockpasskeysecurityhelp.com
SOURCE: 2004 pontiac grand am will not start.
ignition switch or worn key or the body control module is going out.
SOURCE: 1996 pontiac grand prix won't start-security problem
you have to bump the key so it make like to start , but don't let it start, them wait until the light stop flashing, should be like in 10 mins, then turn the key to off position for like 10sec, then open the ignition again , but at this time don't bump the key just go up to the run position and wait another 10min until the light stop flashing, ..do the same one more time ..be sure there is not any codes stored in the pcm , disconnect the battery first..to clear the pcm memory..hope this help this time
SOURCE: My 2002 Grand am is have a passlock problem. The
I discovered the hard way- ($85.00 later) Step 1: turn key to "on" position. step 2: open driver door. (security light should be flashing on and off) step 3: wait ten minutes with key in "on position and driver door open. step 4: when 10 minutes is up-(youll know-because security light will have stoped flashing after 10 minutes) close driver door ,turn key to "off" position, then turn key "on" to start. drives me crazy!! I have to do it to mine sometimes 2-5 times a day! GM doesnt have a fuel reset button etc. like fords do.
SOURCE: i have a 94 pontiac firebird the security light
my car 94 firebird was doing same thing until one night it left me stuck! the 'chip' on your key is not making good conact so the car thinks its the wrong key and activating security. you need to probably replace ignition. i put a piece of aluminum foil around chip and the car started! but of course thats a temp fix

Unfortunately you are correct, this
vehicle has the PASSLOCK II key
based engine disabling system, and currently it
is engaged. The sensor does not recognize &
retain the passlock reader chip in your ignition
switch any longer.
A bypass is required to circumvent.
If left unchecked, it will lock down the fuel injector
rail (as it has now), and you will need to
tow it in to GM for evaluation, and resetting.
Eventuall, the 10 minute over ride will cease to
work and you will finally be forced to visit
a Pontiac/GM dealer.
But, if you want to just remove this system
from the equation entirelly,
I suggest the PLJX bypass kit to get around
this issue.
This Passlock Bypass Module is designed to momentarilly
allow the engine to remote start by sending a proper
coded pulse to open the fuel rail passlock injector
cut off circuit.
The output from an alarm/remote starter
would then shut down the pulse, once it has detected
the engine has engaged, and preserve the integrity
of the passlock system.
That is it's designed purpose.
However, in your case, this input wire on the PLJX module,
instead of going to a momentary ground pulse from
an alarm/remote starter,
would go to a constant chassis ground, through
the bypass module, grounding out the PASSLOCK.
The PASSLOCK would then always be bypassed as long
as that wire is chassis grounded.
I can not speak about a damaged passlock system,
like if a thief has destroyed it, because I do not
get into this part of GM'S security application.
Coincidence to installing
after market remote starters, this does work on bypassing
passlock in most all GM vehicles,
including your year GM vehicle as well.
Also, this is a self learning, resistor sensing
and adjusting module. Once the VATS wires have been tapped,
you would press the program button to learn,
and it does. The car should then allow start
with any hardware store key.
