SOURCE: where is the coolant bleeder valve on a 1998 pontiac grand am

There is probably two of them. One is located in the top of the thermostat housing at the rear (drivers side) of the engine. The other is located in the heater tube where it goes into the top of the water pump housing. They are just little brass bleeder screws with 7mm heads n them.

Overflow boiling over

Be sure the air is purged from system. The coolant pipe above the front valve cover near waterpump has a 7mm bleeder screw that will need to be loosened to purge air.

Temputure gauge fluctuates when car is at operating temputure

The radiator might have "air pockets". They cause erratic readings at the temperature gauge. Check the system to see if bleeder valves are provided. If they exist, just open the valves allowing air out of the system while filling with coolant until coolant drips from the bleeders. If bleeder valves are not provided, open radiator cap and fill with coolant. Start the engine for about 30 seconds, check coolant level and fill to level if necesary.

I would like to find something on the web that will walk me through changing the water pump on my 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix 3100 V6.

This guy did a really nice job showing how to do this this.

After the new water pump is installed fill th cooling system. There may be two bleeder valves one for sure is on the pipe that comes out of the back of the water pump and there may be one on the T-stat housing where the upper hose attaches. Open both of those until antifreeze come out of them.

Start the engine. Top off coolant as necessary and periodically open the bleeder screws until coolant comes out. Let the engine idle until it has come up to operating temp and the fans come on. Put the radiator cap back on and your good to go.

Coolant

Open the surge tank cap and pour the coolant in. At the top of the therm. housing, you'll see a bleeder valve. Start and run the car, make sure the surge tank is full, and crack the bleeder valve until you see a steady stream of coolant come out.
