Best advice. Your local library has subscriptions to online service manuals for most vehicles, you can access them free, but you have to go to the branch to get it.

SOURCE: timing chain maintenance

It's actaully a timing belt, not a chain. But the mileage recommendation i believe is 60,000 or 90,000 miles.

Does a 2005 cavalier have a timing belt or chain 2.2 and when do I change it?

This 2.2 Liter engine uses a Timing chain, timing chains are never replaced unless the engine is being overhauled, there is no periodic replacement required like a Timing belt. Engines that use chains are much more durable than those that use belts and last longer per dollar spent on maintenance costs. I wish I had a dollar for every ruined engine due to a failed rubber timing belt.

When should you change timing chain?

timing chains are not serviced unless the engine is overhauled or the chain breaks, timing belts are replaced on a regular basis, this varies from 60,000-105,000 miles depending on brand and model, u have a chain.

When is the recommended change for a timing belt change?

Ok, first, GM uses a timing chain in its engines, which goes much longer than a belt. With the timing chain, you don't have to worry about changing it until you're having to worry about overhauling the engine. Some people will try to sell you additional shop work, but it's not necessary. These are known to go for more than 400,000 miles with no problems if the engine lasts that long, but are always changed when the engine is rebuilt or overhauled. I currently own a silverado with 120,000 miles on the original timing chain, an s-10 with 210,000 miles on the original timing chain, and a suburban with 135,000 miles on the original timing chain, just for a reference for you. Hope this helped you out.

How to replace a timing chain 2000 chevy cavalier

I am familiar with that vehicle but generally with timing chain replacement, the engine needs full access for pulley and cover removal and in some cases the cylinder head requires removal.
Generally timing chains last so that they only need replacement at engine overhaul and it is not an economic proposition to have to replace a chain unless some relative degree of engine work is also required at that time.

Engine timing chains generally have a tensioner on them which maintains tension, but some chains can wear significantly and cause timing cover to be "ground away" because of "slop".

If the engine is making the noisy rattle of the timing chain against the cover etc, I would schedule a top overhaul (head, machine, test and valve grind) with the chain replacement dependent on mileage with the degree of action.

Some simple simplex timing chains (type of chain similar to motor bike chain) may be replaced without dismantling the engines but I would expect your chain would be a "duplex" dual sprocket type, these are most common.
These chains are not generally expensive but replacing them can involve a fair amount of work.

Good Luck and hope this helps, Others will have different ideas.

TIMING ON OVERHAULED ENGINE

if you overhauled the engine and replaced the timing chain & gears, as long as you installed them properly and have installed the ign wires in the right places, the distributor is "locked in place" and is non adjustable (unless you are me, but that's another story) Computer makes all timing changes.

Timing belt removal schedule

There is no recommended mileage, when the engine fails and needs overhaul would be the only time the chain would be replaced, and that would depend on the condition of the chain and associated parts. These 4.6L V8 run hundreds of thousands of miles in most cases with little trouble but regular scheduled maintenance.
