Changed the gas cap and engine light is still on

Brought it in and the code that was given sugested change gas cap which we did but engine light is still on. the code given also suggested vacume leak or replacing canister. the car does not miss or idle roughly the engine seems to be working fine. what should we check for first. the purge solenoid vale and where is it located and how do we check it. if that shows good then do you suggest changing the charcoal cannister and is that located by the gas tank

Does it have the 2.3l Quad 4 engine? If so replace the plastic piece that the coils go into, they go bad and leak spark to the cam towers and then you get a nice one or multiple cylinder misfire.

SOURCE: My 2004 Sunfire check engine

DTC P0442, P0455 or P0456 are all diagnostic codes indicating a leak has been detected in the EVAP system:
- P0442 EVAP Leak Monitor .040 Leak Detected (Medium Leak)
- P0455 EVAP Leak Monitor Large Leak Detected
- P0456 EVAP Leak Monitor .020 Leak Detected (Small Leak)

What this code means is that the computer has tested the evap system and was not able to draw a vacuum on the fuel tank. it does this by turning on the evap vent valve which closes the fuel tank vent off, It then opens the vacuum solenoid and allows engine vacuum to be drawn on the fuel tank. A sensor in the fuel tank monitors the Pressure/Vacuum levels on the tank and reports this to the computer. If the computer does not see a change in pressure/vacuum on the tank then code P0455 will set.

Check under the hood to make certain no vacuum lines are disconnected, check your fuel cap if it isn't sealing correctly or is missing or the wrong one this will cause that code to set, You may have a bad vent valve in the gas cap causing the problem.

If you first get a P0442 or P0456 then a while later get a P0455 it is a sign a hose is going bad.
It is common for the hoses over the gas tank on Jeeps and some other chrysler cars to go bad, which requires removal of the gas tank to repair. Could also mean a piece of charcoal from the vapor canister is stuck in a line. Blowing the lines out can fix it.

If you get a P0455 (large leak) at the outset it more likely a stuck valve or a hose which came loose. A smoke machine is the fastest way to finds leaks in these systems but not a common tool for do it your selfers (click image diagram for zoom).

My check engine and check fuel cap light keep coming on after i changed the gas cap twice and reset the light it came back on what could this be. I drive a 06 lincoln navigator

You need to diagnose any codes you get
& smoke test the evap system, to find a
problem

Seldom does throwing on parts with a name similar
to a code work

Codes have nothing to do with installing parts

Clearing codes, clears all data needed to diagnose
the failed system & the evap system only runs every few
days,so you done as far as codes helping

$500.00 is a pretty steep price for an oil change!

If this is a gas cap issue, be aware that simply removing and replacing the cap will not immediately fix it. Most of the loose cap errors will only reset after the vehicle is driven for a period of time, not right as soon as you replace the cap. Speaking of replacing the cap, if the original has a bad seal, you aren't fixing anything doing what you've done.

Get a new gas cap first, then give it a while driving to see if it clears the error.

Engine check light comes on and stays on for awhile then goes off. Dometimes when I fill the gas tank the check engine light comes on. is something to do with the gas cap or the instrument lights.

IF IT COME ON EVERY TIME YOU GET GAS.GAS CAP HAS BAD SEAL IT MORE LIKELY YOUR PROBLEM BUT LET AUTO ZONE SCAN IT FREE TO SEE WHAT TROUBLE CODE YOU ARE GETTING.

Engine error lite P0465

Replacing the EGR valve, its actuator, or your DPFE sensor could all be at fault. I would probably start with the valve itself since it's an EGR leak code. Your gas cap was a wasted repair. The gas cap would cause a P0441 or 445 evap code, but not an EGR code.

Gascap light comes on everytime i start up the car

I had this similar problem but gascap and engine light on. I changed out the gas cap cleared codes and both were back o. Went to the dealer he insisted it was the after market gascap changed in and cleared the codes. Before I even left the lot they were both back on. Finally they found the problem they had to change out some kind of pump and canister and it fixed the problem.

Engine light stays on even after oil change and air filter

An oil and air filter change will NEVER fix a check engine light. It would be helpful if you brought your car somewhere to scan the engine computer and determine what fault code/s have been registered. I promise this will be beneficial in trying to make the light go off. Sometimes something simple like an evaporative leak registered by filling the gas tank while the engine is running. In this case the light will likely reset itself after the next fill up. A gas cap itself can leak and trigger the engine light. There are a multitude of things that can turn the engine light on, it helps to narrow the field by having the engine scanned. I hope this helps!

Suzuki forenza

I have had the same problem recently. I did some searching on the internet and came up with nothing. I went out to my car and decided to take a look at the gas cap. I noticed that after turning it and hearing the clicks that are supposed to tell you it is tight, the cap came off again with no effort at all. I brought the gas cap to Advance Auto Parts and I found out that the spring mechanism inside the top of the gas cap was worn from use. This was causing the vapors to leak out inturn causing the check engine light to come on. I bought a replacement STANT gas cap (specifically for the 2006 Suzuki Forenza) for $9 and the light has been off for the past two weeks. The dealer wanted $80 to diagnose the problem and then another $30 if they needed to order a gas cap. So, I decided $9 was better to waste then $110 trying to figure out the problem. I hope this helps.
