1993 Volvo 940 gle - speedometer not working

My friends 1993 Volvo 940 GLE speedometer stop working but the kilometer reading still works. What are the possible cause?

About 240.00 according to the volvo dr. ,fountain vally ,ca. An elect. part behind the speedo. is the problem . My 91 940 speedo stops working at 45 mph. thats what they told me. good luck,pete.

There is a speed sensor on the rear diff cover that may me shot, however it is regulated by hertz so the dealer is the best place to see if the wires are okay. That sensor can be costly.

this is what holds the battery in place it usually twists one way or the other to un lock it and there should be a bolt perhaps at the base of the battery with a plastic type holder
