1998 beetle leaking coolant

On my 98 manual beetle, I noticed my red coolant light coming on one day and immediately checked the fluid, under the minimum level, which was odd considering i just replaced ALL the fluids. since then i noticed a sweet smell (obviously the coolant) checked under the hood and i can see it dripping, not bad but enough. within a few days the light comes back on and i put more coolant in. until recently I've noticed it soaking up/dripping more and more coolant. all has happened within a month or so. what the **** did i do?! i know the mileage is high (147,000) but could it really be the water pump? head gasket or just a broken seal? i don't see any leak from the top, but for sure overnight its been leaking the neon green stuff! why all of a sudden?

First of all, it's a VW, so it shouldn't have ANY "neon green stuff", it should have pink G12 coolant from VW. If the leak is getting worse, it's a hose failing, and splitting worse and worse under the cooling system pressure. find the leaking hose and replace it, but I'd recommend using a VW specific mechanic, so the "neon green stuff" doesn't make it back into your car, where it shouldn't be.

SOURCE: 2000 Jetta is Leaking antifreeze and smoking

I think you mean you saw water vapor (some call it steam) not smoke.

You probably have a hose leaking (badly). If it's not a hose, your water pump shaft seal is probably kaput.

SOURCE: gauges say no pressure in engine 1995 vw golf

Get someone to check oil pressure with a mechanical gauge, to verify whether you have oil pressure or not. These engine/vehicles, have 2 warning sensors & a control module in the instrument panel. Once you know you have pressure for sure, then you can proceed from there.

Thermostat needs to be replaced. Refill the coolant after the engine is completely cool. If its still hot the coolant will expand and make it look like the radiator is full. Temp light won't always come on for a thermostat issue.

vw beetles do not have a temp gauge so instead when the car is cold the light is blue at normal temp no light when over heating or low coolant red light and it beeps, you need the right coolant for your vw it is pink in color and some napas have it (Not DEX Cool) and you probably have a coolant leak, usually a plastic flang at rear of cylinder head goes bad

My thermostat light comes on constantly blinking red, my car runs hot occasionally, it doesn't leak any fluids but i have to fill the coolant more often than normal. What are the possible problems?

You may not be able to see a leak because it may be a pressure leak. In other words it will only loose coolant while the engine is running and the system is under pressure. One other problem may be a leaking head gasket. If you notice white smoke or staem that stops shortly after starting this may be a problem. For a small pressure leak, try a contaner of bars leak in the radiator

Low fluid light means check your coolant which prob whats on the ground. Depending on the rate of leakage fill coolant start try and locate leak sounds like a hose or water pump slow leak prob water pump fast leak hose good luck

You can idle the car up to operating temperature to see if the cooling fan engages. there is a fuse for the fan, it's a 30 amp breaker located in the fuse panel mounted under your hood right on top of your battery. Your Owners Manual should have an illustration.

2003 Volkswagon beetle temp light is red. (Usually starts out blue and then goes out when the engine warms up.)

A red light indicator may signify a hotter temperature, but may not necessarily indicate an overheating condition. A couple things can lead to this condition - low fluid level (check the fluid resevoir), the wrong coolant being used previously, a weak or failing water pump, a plugged or partially plugged coolant radiator, a bad fan, or a bad thermostat. I'd personally check the coolant first, usually needs to be replaced at about 100,000 miles or so, then check to see if you have any leaks if the fluid level is depressed. Then allow the car to operate from a cold start in the drive while observing the performance under the hood and compare it to the dummy light.

Hope this helps.
