On my 98 manual beetle, I noticed my red coolant light coming on one day and immediately checked the fluid, under the minimum level, which was odd considering i just replaced ALL the fluids. since then i noticed a sweet smell (obviously the coolant) checked under the hood and i can see it dripping, not bad but enough. within a few days the light comes back on and i put more coolant in. until recently I've noticed it soaking up/dripping more and more coolant. all has happened within a month or so. what the **** did i do?! i know the mileage is high (147,000) but could it really be the water pump? head gasket or just a broken seal? i don't see any leak from the top, but for sure overnight its been leaking the neon green stuff! why all of a sudden?
First of all, it's a VW, so it shouldn't have ANY "neon green stuff", it should have pink G12 coolant from VW. If the leak is getting worse, it's a hose failing, and splitting worse and worse under the cooling system pressure. find the leaking hose and replace it, but I'd recommend using a VW specific mechanic, so the "neon green stuff" doesn't make it back into your car, where it shouldn't be.

I think you mean you saw water vapor (some call it steam) not smoke.
You probably have a hose leaking (badly). If it's not a hose, your water pump shaft seal is probably kaput.

Get someone to check oil pressure with a mechanical gauge, to verify whether you have oil pressure or not. These engine/vehicles, have 2 warning sensors & a control module in the instrument panel. Once you know you have pressure for sure, then you can proceed from there.

Hello There
It's the water pump. One of the most common problems with the VW/Audi's. It was never the head.
Hope this helps. Please don't forget to rate me.
Thanks
