What is cost to repair a broken valve spring?

The car overheated to the point it set off the warning alarm. No fluid showing in the radiator reservoir. Fluid was below themostat. Antifreeze was added to radiator reservoir and restarted without letting the engine cool completely. Heard a metal pop sound. Then the metal clinking sound. Out mechanic thinks it's a broken valve spring. Running a little rough and you can hear the constant clinking of metal. The car has 179,000 miles on it. Is it worth repairing?

Hello,

when the car overheats, is there still water in the radiator?

If there is water in the radiator and the car overheats, then it means there might be some dirt or blockage in the radiator or condenser.

When the car is on the motion, air passes through the front and assists the fan to cool the engine. There are situation whereby air doesn't have free flow because of blockage in the radiator and condenser. Dust and debris can cause blockage. If this be the case, have your radiator washed thoroughly and cleaned.

If there is no water in the radiator when the car overheats, then there is a probably a leakage from the water pump. Or maybe your fan isn't blowing properly. The fan might be blowing weak air.

The above are what could cause your engine to over heat.

So start the check from the radiator. Poor water into the radiator, wait for some minutes, look under the car and observe if water is going to leak. If there is a leak, it might be from the water pump or a leaking hose.

If water from radiator has no leak, have your radiator washed and clean the condenser has they might block air that is suppose to cool the engine.

Also, make sure your fan is blowing properly or well enough to cool the engine.

Make sure you have the above checked thoroughly as they are the major causes of problems like this.

This overheating problem could lead to a burnt gasket and this can dry the engine oil which will eventually knock the engine. So have this problem fixed to prevent further damage that will cost you more money.

Lastly, remove the hose that connects the radiator to the engine, water from the engine will come out. Pour water into the radiator, the water will flow through the hose down to the ground. Do this severally. Now connect the hose back to the engine, pour water into the radiator. Start the engine, the water in the radiator will reduce, add more water till radiator is full.

In summary, the major cause of over heating problem is from the radiator, fan, water pump, blockage in the hose, and dirt in in/on the condenser. These are area you need to concentrate on.

I forgot to mention that the acceleration meter or engine meter on the dash board shouldn't be more the 5. It should be below 5. If it is above 5, it can cause overheating. I hope you understand what I mean.....

Regards.

My overdrive light is flashing on and off on my 2000 ford Windstar van could a blown fuse be causing it

First of all have an auto parts store check for trouble codes...The flashing overdrive light is a warning that the overdrive unit is overheating and/or low on fluid...#1 choice is overheating and you will be looking at a costly rebuild if this is not attended too soon...Have your radiator, which also has a transmission cooler flushed, cleaned and refilled immediately...Have someone check if fluid is leaking then cleaned and filled with fresh fluid...saailer

Hi my thermastat was sticking and so we replaced it cause ocasionally it would run hot and then cold and we had car hooked up to censor that said it was thermostat. Well after we did that now vehicle is...

Hi Ashley, I'm AL the owner of Big As Auto Repair in St Charles MO. I look forward to helping you with your problem.

Ashley, every once in a great while we technicians run across an engine where you can put the thermostat in backward, most engine's you can't install it backwards but some you can.

This is a good place to start. Check the thermostat and make sure the spring side is going into the engine block, this is the correct way to install it. If the spring side of the thermostat is pointing inside the thermostat housing then turn it over so it's pointing inside the engine block. If after checking this out and you need further help go to my website. Click here: Auto Repair

Water pump

You have a coolant leak and your car is overheating.

Coolant is a mix of antifreeze and water and tastes "sweet"(WARNING: DO NOT EAT!!).
Is your temperature gauge pointing in the "red"(needle pointing to the far right). The temperature guage is on your dash with a thermometer symbol.

After the car has cooled(a few hours) find the source of coolant leak(green fluid).
It is most likely a hose or a hole in your radiator(large aluminum box attached to the front of the car behind the grill).
Fix the Hose or replace your radiator(depending on location of leak), and refill with proper mix of antifreeze(you can buy premixed coolant at your local auto parts store).

The car is overheating. i wanted to drain the radiator and put new coolant in. there are two valves on the radiator hose. there are no lids on them. are they a release valve of some sort?

sounds like radiator flush points. back flush cooling system before adding new fluids. it will make your cooling system work better and last longer to prevent corrosion.

My 2003 grand am overheated suddenly, died, made an unusual sound, and will not restart or hold coolant. The motor turns over just wont fire. could it have jumped time?

It could have but that would not explain why it's not holding radiator fluid. If you don't see the Radiator fluid on teh ground, check your engine oil. If the water is in there your going to be rebuilding the engine. If you can not access the timing chain/belt by removing a cover and have a coil pack you can remove a valve cover and watch the valves while cranking the motor to see if you have a broken timing chain/belt. If you do the valves will not go up and down when the engine cranks. Remove all of the spark plugs and cranks the motor for about 30 seconds then check the engine area for water discharge. If there is water in any cylinder you cracked your block, blew a head gasket, or cracked the head on the vehicle. I recommend you get the Haynes repair manual on your vehicle to continue troubleshooting or for doing any of these repairs..

Car overheated and blew radiator fluid

you need to rent a coolant system pressure test tool from autozone, o'reily's, or any parts store. cost is $20, you get your money back when you return tool. very easy to use, fill radiator and resorvoir with water because coolant will only be wasted til you repair leak. attach tool to radiator and pressure up to somewhere around 12-15 psi. dont exceed 15 psi. pressure coolant system and look at water pump, radiator and hoses, heater hoses, scan engine.any and all leaks will be revealed.

There is green fluid spraying from the top of my radiator causing my engine to smoke. No overheating alarms are going off.

sounds like you have a pinhole in the radiator... it will take a long time to set the warning lights off with a pinhole but will make a mess and get worse ...i would say fix it before it becomes a big hole

The tempature light came on and the car started smokeing

You may have a busted radiator hose, or a leak somewhere. Overheating can also be caused by a clogged up radiator. The sypmtoms of clogged radiator is overheating at higher engine speeds, such freeway driving, but street driving is okay. The first thing you should be concerned right now is do not use the car untill the overheating problem is fixed, because overheating will surely damage the engine. Second, check to determine if there is no major damage to the engine at this point. Check your oil conditions. If its milky in color, which I hope is not. If it is milky in color thats a major repair, that cost a lot of money. I hope that everything is still okay on the engine, get the overheating problem fixed first which is a lot cheaper than replacing a bad engine, before you use the car again. Hope this is helpfull for you.
