2000 Ford Contour - only with the A/C on, the car in drive, car not moving, mostly with brakes applied. Low growl coming from front of car. Any of the above things change and the growl goes away.
The groel is the AC compressor itself when it is turning at the slower speed of idle.
As long as no error codes are produced, no other drivability issue develops, it is considered within normal operating noises.
The only thing you should check is the condition of the bearing on that pulley sheave the clutch clamps onto when it engages. As long as the bearing is not sloppy loose, nor binding tight from a lack of lube, that would be the only point of concern as it is getting up there in mileage.. This is best checked with the serpentine belt removed, and the other idlers and tensioner should be checked for the condition of the bearings at the same time.

hi, i would venture to say that you have an air leak somewhere, ie; a split in a vacumn hose or the like check all your hoses on the intake side for bad fit or splits. hope this helps, thanks for useing fixya!

no problem. If you are getting that low of voltage on a load then you might want to test the alternator as well to make sure it is running at capacity.

could be but not likely. sound like abs pump or abs ecu failure. to make sure check DTC's
SOURCE: 1997 Ford Contour with a rough idle while stopped
This is a common complaint on these cars. I own a 96 myself.
Assuming that you engine is fine and runs smoothly under normal operation, and just is rough "feeling" at idle while stopped; then I would suggest changing the motor mounts...the mounts may not be broken, but the rubber isolators get worn and soft, and transffer normal engine vibration into the chasis of the vehicle. Mine was doing the same after changing the mounts good as new again.
Please note...don't use cheap mounts, by the better grade/quality mounts.

Some guys at AutoZone suggested it could be the AC compressor slowly going out. Of course getting it replaced is the ideal, but they also recommended replacing the AC line filter and adding oil charge to the line.
Is it easy enough to change out the clutch and not the compressor itself?
