You can try the brake light switch.. it is located under dash ..follow the brake pedal up you will see a switch ... unplug wires and use a paper clip or piece of wire to to jump... if brake light comes on replace switch.....

99 mercury villager, all light work but the brake light when I apply the brakes? any ideas

It isn't unknown for both bulbs to fail at the same time. Other possibilities are fuse, switch or wiring.

I have a 2000 Mercury Villager and the fuses for the turn signals and brake lights keep blowing. Why?

A burning smell is an important symptom of something VERY WRONG. Get it towed to a repair shop, and get them to trace the wiring harness.

Rear tail lights on my 1999 mercury villager won't turn off

Your brake light switch is bad or it has slipped out from where it's mounted, against the brake pedal. The lights will stay on until you change or fix that switch. Have it checked.

Tail lights only work while pressure is being made on the brake pedal, lights work fine otherwise, I assume this is a Vaccum leak somewhere, any idea where i can find the line?

If tail ights only work while putting o nthe brakes, that means the bulbs need replaced.

Those bulbs have two elements in them,,,1 for brake lights , 1 for tail ights.

Repalce the bulbs and all will be fine.

Brake lights stay on all the time. tail light 95 mercury villager

Just had the same thing happen to our minivan.......went to the Nissan dealer, since the Villager and the Nissan are the same van, and they actually had the parts in stock. Tell them what is wrong and have them pull up the schematic. You need 2 plastic buttons that push in the holes by the brake pedal. It cost about $10 for the 2 of them.
