You should not rely on the dash gage for this decision... If you have verified poor pressure, only then should consider changing it. Remember oil can loose pressure at many places internally and replacing it may not accomplish your goal.

Now to change the oil pump without engine removal is quite a task, take off the oil pan and the sump filter, then with lots of light, you can reach up in there with a long allen socket or 12pt 7/16 size?, and pull it out.... not sure if the distributor needs to come out ...remove it only if necessary. be careful not to turn over the crank if you remove the distributor because it is driven by the camshaft as I recall and this would obviously get change your spark timing set up.
.

good luck

Lifter knocking in my 89 ford ranger

A lifter problem can only be fixed by changing the lifter. You might as well change all of them because it is just as easy since you have already had to take the heads off to get at the noisy lifter. While you are at it, get the heads reconditioned or a valve job. More than likely the oil was not changed as often as it should have been. Dirty oil works like sand paper on the valve stems.

I bought a 89 2.9L v6 ford ranger that had been sitting for two years. it started right up and i drove it around for three weeks but the it died suddenly while driving, i got it to start a couple of times...

i hope you changed all the fluids. New oil, coolent, trans. oil and draind all the old fuel. if not the fuel injecters need to be cleaned but first check to see if the crankshaft can be turned if you can you may save that engine.

I need to raise my engine on a ford ranger to replace the oil pump. I can't get the engine high enough. 1989, 2300cc, standard, no air

You'll need to unbolt the motor from the transmission to raise the engine enough to get the oil pump out.

Low oil pressure on guage of my 89 ford ranger 6 cylinder

Could be low oil level, a bad sending unit, or actually low oil pressure due to a worn oil pump or worn bearings.

Get spark, but no power to new fuel pump 1999 ford Ranger

the inertia switch is in front of the passenger seat, bolted to the fire wall, hidden by the carpet on an 89 and behind the kick panel on the 99. 99 should have a picture that looks like a gas station pump with a line thru it. pull panel off, push big red button. on 89 its the little grey button on the top.
