On hot days I sometimes smell fumes inside when I get into my car after it has been sitting out in the desert sun. Other times, when the vents are open I smell fumes inside my car at lower temps while driving. This problem has been with me for a several years, but has gotten worse in summer and particularly bad this summer. Recently, half way up a long steep mountain after driving 100 miles with the AC on with no problem, I smelled heavy fumes at a lower outside temperature right before the check engine light came on and stayed on. Within the last month I had the carbon canister and one of the solenoid valves changed and the lines cleaned after the check engine light coded a 1440. This time the code was 1441. I recently changed the gas cap, the purge solenoid was changed 3 years ago along with carbon canister, and 2 years ago I had the fuel filler pipe replaced. Nothing has fixed this problem.

The is a short rubber hose in the the fuel line that connects to metal tubes on the driver side of the engine. When it is cold, the rubber shrinks, and if the clamps are loose, the fuel will leak from there. Tighten the clamps or replace the short hose with a hose that has some flex, a bit long, to accommodate the shrinkage movement.
Good luck with the dealer, because when the engine heats up the hose the fuel does not leak at all. This was a recall on WRXs but even with the same setup, Subaru denies there is an issue in the 2.5 fuel line layout. My dealer told me to call a tow truck when it happens again, no matter where or when, and bring it in?!?!?!

Hi
Have the EGR valve checked on the car, also you can remove this yourself and try cleaning it with carb cleaner. they cost about Ā£180 or $280 approx. they do normally trigger these lights.
Hope this helps.
Regards
Dan
p.s have the air mass sensor checked also.
