The dealer service center has diagnosed a problem with the heating/cooling system as needing a new body control module. Trouble is, a new one costs $750 plus installation. I can get one at the local scrap yard parts store, but I've been told that it might not work if it comes from a car that doesn't have the same trim level and accessories as mine. I've also been told that these computers may be irreversibly programed with a car's vin number so that a BCM will only ever work with one car. Is this true, or could I save money and install a used one? Thanks for any help.

The ability of the control modules to communicate through the serial data circuit

The identification of any stored diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and their status
The use of the Diagnostic System Check will identify the correct procedure for diagnosing the system and where the procedure is located.
The traction control switch is a input to the body control module, with a scan tool hooked up an looking at BCM data ,check for conformation the traction control switch is turning on an off !
SERVICE TRACTION SYSTEM
The IPC illuminates the SERVICE TRACTION SYSTEM indicator in the message center when the electronic brake control module (EBCM) detects a malfunction in the traction control system. The IPC receives a class 2 message from the EBCM requesting illumination. The SERVICE TRACTION SYSTEM indicator illuminates for 60 seconds when the condition is present. The IPC sends a class 2 message to the radio in order to activate an audible warning.
TRAC OFF
The IPC illuminates the TRAC OFF indicator when the following occurs:
?€¢
The electronic brake control module (EBCM) inhibits the traction control system due to a malfunction in the traction control system. The IPC receives a class 2 message from the EBCM requesting illumination.
?€¢
The body control module (BCM) detects that the traction control switch has been pressed (signal circuit is low). The BCM sends a class 2 message to the EBCM in order to disable traction control. The IPC receives a class 2 message from the EBCM requesting illumination. The BCM sends a class 2 message to the radio in order to activate an audible warning.

Thanks for this. I have read a long thread of a person with a similar problem and had reached the same conclusion. It is good to have it confirmed, I guess. Umm, I wonder if this is one the reasons Detroit is tanking -- seems like a design problem to build such a part to begin with.
