Pull the position knob off the dash and check to see if its cracked/broken where it connects to the cable. No special tools required,should just slip off with a little effort.

Usually a sign of a faulty blend door under the dash.
Some are moved by vac and some are electric.

SOURCE: no heat - ac stays on blowing through defrost vents

If you have the heater directed to the windshield, the AC will turn on. Move the control away from defrost.

check for a vacuum line that has fallen off the diaphram vacuum "switch can" near the vent shift lever at the heater box under the dash passenger side

SOURCE: 1997 explorer max ac switches between front and defroster vents

Check the vacuum hose going to the heater control valve,it may have popped off. If that is on. check the vacuum hose going to your recirculation door under the right side of your dash. I hope this helps.

SOURCE: AC IS BLOWING THROUGH DEFROST

The A/C module placed inside central console has air flaps for air flows guiding against center, lateral, lower, defrost - air vents. Air flaps are acting by electrically motorized mechanisms. Here you must search for damages!

SOURCE: ac blowing out defroster and heat vents only

There is a vent door actuator motor that is not working in the dash,the dash will have to be removed to access the actuator motor

2002 ford explorer AC and heat blowing in dash, but very weak from the vents
On the motorcraft parts web site, you can blow up
a picture of the HVAC Blend Door Motors & locations,
as well as part numbers

You can get failed motor from Amazon

With knowing where the motors are located, try switching
the air flow modes manually, to see what positions do not work

Then you know what motors to replace

I also have professional scan tool software & can see the codes
for the motors in enhanced data.

My heater does not blow in floor in a dodgeram 1500
the heater vacuum motor and lines needs to be checked.Also get the blend door checked.

AC is only blowing through the defrost vents in the dashboard?
I think your problem is the head unit that selects where the air comes out ie. Face, floor, defrost, or hi-level face and floor. If that's not working then it will not let you switch location that you want the air to come out.
