My 2002 PT cruiser (126000 miles) recently started boiling over from the coolant fill reservoir, but ONLY while idling. While driving at highway speeds, the temp indicator stays at halfway (even in 102 degree F ambient temperature). This began after Goodyear did an oil change for me and left the radiator cap halfway on. Checked fan operation: it works while idling. Cleaned bugs off the radiator fins. Top radiator hose is hot, so I assume the thermostat is working.

Check your oil dipstick for coolant, or a mucky substance. Your symptoms sound like a blown head gasket.

I have a 2001 PT and it overheats the rad fan will not turn on. I took it to auto zone to hook it up to the code reader and it said that BBECM has detected an open or shorted condition in the radiator fan relay circuit Probable cause open or shorted high speed radiator fan relay.
What dose this mean is it a relay or the computer. I have read alot about the pcm needing re-programed is this something the Chrysler deal should take care of it seem to be happening to alot of people.

GOT IT FIXED!! The radiator cap was damaged by the Goodyear guys who changed the oil. A new cap appears to have fixed the problem!
OK, I was wrong. It WAS the fan motor. Duh - it has two speeds, two windings, and the idle side of the motor was burned out. $99. Coulda been worse.
