High idle after having battery changed

I have a 2001 Honda Odyssey that was having trouble starting. It would start but seemed to be slow to start. I took it to my local Auto Zone and then as a double check took it to my local Advanced Auto and had the alternator, starter, and battery checked. On both occasions, I was told it was a bad battery. Due to the cost difference, I took my car to Wal-Mart and purchased and battery and had it installed. When I picked up my car the car seemed to not be driving as it usually did. The brakes were difficult to press and stop the car and the gas peddle was easier than usual. Once I got the car home and turned of the ignition and removed the key I realized the car was still powering down even after the key had been removed from the ignition. I restarted the car to see if it would do it again and discovered the engine was idling at 2500 rpm and it continued to climb to 3000 rpm and held steady there. I then turned off the AC and radio and it climbed to 3500 rpm and remained there. Other than a battery replacement there were no other problems with the car. Can you tell me what happened and what I can do to fix it?

This only applies if you have no error codes or warning lights.
Replacing the battery on older Hondas will sometimes make the computer forget how to idle. You ned to do a "idle relearn procedure".
Car off and cold.
Open hood.
All lights & accessories OFF.
In PARK.
Key in ignition turn to ON for 2 sec.
Start as normal.
Idle at 3000PRM for 5 min,
Keep the car running
Foot off gas --> go to front of car.
Let run for TWO radiator fan on/off cycles (maybe 5 min)
Turn AC for 5 min.
You are done!

This is characteristic of a reset to the EMC (Engine control module). If the power is removed from the car during battery replacement the engine/driving parameters are reset back to the original factory settings. Running the car for about 10 to 15 minutes about 8 miles will begin the relearning to the idle.

Hope this helps?

SOURCE: 1999 honda accord idle problem:

Is the engine light on, if so have them read? Take a look the charging system (see if it is above 13volts and below 16volts), see if the gas cap is on firmly and the o-ring on it is in good shape, look at the cars maintenance history and see how long its been since the last complete tune-up. If there are no codes recorded then it would probably be a mechanical issue, Look at coils, fuel pressure, timing, and injectors. If you need more specific info, just let me know, Good luck.

SOURCE: 2000 accord v6 engine idle goes up and down after start up

I am having the same issue after I changed my battery today. Upon doing some research it seems like there is some way of aiding the computer with proper idling. I haven't done it yet... plan on going to the dealership where I got the battery, but from my understanding you disconnect the negative line from the battery for a few mins, reconnect, and then apply gas at 3000 rpm for a few mins until the fan kicks on. AND this will help reset your car to proper idling. Good luck

SOURCE: 1991 Honda Accord won't start

Could be the igniter inside the distributor (unless you have an external coil). Look on your distributor to see if there are 5 wires leading from it. If there are, you have an external coil that is likely bad... If you have only 4 wires coming from your distributor it is most likely the internal ignition inside the distributor ($50.+). AS SOON AS YOU GET IT STARTED CHANGE YOUR OIL. Your fuel pump has loaded your cylinders with fuel and it has probably leaked down into your oil pan making your oil thin and mixed with gas.

2001 Honda Odyssey randomly stalls

I had this happen once on an older car. Mine was caused by a loose carburetor. I tried everything and no luck then one day I put my hand on the carburetor to brace myself as I looked at the lower engine and I felt it move.

while your car is likely EFI, you could have an air leak along the intake. Get a can of brake cleaner spray and with the engine running, spray all the connection points and if the idle suddenly slows or speeds up, you found the leak.

then just tighten the connection and try again. If it does t change, you need to change the gasket.

hopefully this helps.

2001 honda odyssey has a p1399 code changed spark plugs and checked coils but still has a rough idle maybe egr valve or ports blocked with carbon

code p 1399 refers to random misfire ===causes --fuel /ignition--MAP sensor---IAC valve ( idle air control valve )
misfires are more from faulty injectors and low fuel pressure than from electronic problems
unless you have been burning lots of oil , the ports will be clean so have the injectors serviced

Yes the IAC valve could be the problem, or the throttle body could be dirty.

Your idle air control motor or valve may be faulty. Or the throttle position sensor may be out of whack, out of range. It sounds like a high idle problem, not a problem in the gearbox. Have the engine computer scanned for any trouble codes.
Good luck.

Will the car start from a jump? If so then have the voltage checked while the engine is running, should be something like 14v. If that's ok then I'd say its still the battery. Have you had cold weather? That's a mjor source of battery death.

2003 odyssey studders @ 50 -55 mph seems to studder more if i press on throttle then fall back to 50-55

1999-2003 Honda Odysseys have trouble with their transmissions. Google "honda odyssey transmission" and look at the wikipedia article that comes up for Honda odysseys. In about the fourth paragraph you will find out about the transmission problems. If your van is acting up, have the transmission checked out sooner vs. later. It won't get better on it's own. Have the diagnostic trouble codes retrieved from the car's computer--any code that starts with 17 as in "1740" or codes that start with zero like "0730" are transmission codes and signs of impending failure. I know because my 2002 with 165,000 miles just failed.

My 99 honda odyssey engine just dies, at high speeds, or low speeds, it used to start right back up, but seems to be more frequent & harder to start???

Seems like your main ignition switch is worn out and causing open electrical contact. Replace the steering switch. Part number 35130-SOX-A01. This is part#8 in the "combination switch" of parts catalog. This should solve your problem.
