Passive anti theft system

I have a 98 ford contour,the origanal key to it was broken then i had a key made...in order to start it i have to put the key with the chip in it together with the made key...it worked to turn the car on,now after 4 months the key is turning over but there is no spark to the engine to get it to start.

    when you turn ign on does the pats light come on solid then go out after few secs or does it just flash? if flashes then yes is immobiliser / key issue if not then something else.

PATS system doesn't disable the ignition , fuel or it will stop the engine from cranking. Disables the starter . No spark , look at crankshaft position sensor .

it would be impossible to disable the security feature without a programmer, the entire idea of the system is that no one without the proper key can start the vehicle, there is a program called "sniper" that can disable PATS (the security system in your car, Passive Anti Theft System) but it is costly, another idea to try is to call local lock smiths in your area, it is possible that one may have your key in stock even though the dealer does not,

yes its possible to disable the alarm immobiliser ,remove the ECU unit .then solder in a 12v supply from the on side of ignition,find a suitable connection in the wiring harness feed and solder to a switching transistor on the side of unit with a heat sink to the base connection of a transistor that controls the feed to another three transistors ,starter motor earth for relay,fuel pump earth relay,and ignition ,no relay and away you go location of transistors iam not saying as i dont wont the car theives reading it ,but its as easy as falling off a log when you know the colour of the wires, pin numbers and a magnifying glass soldering iron .took me hours to follow the the connections in the fuse box separating the two halves to follow circuit,tracing wires back to ECU then following printed circuit but i have done it .SO DEALERS EAT YOUR HEART OUT ANOTHER FOOD WITHOUT WORKING FOR IT JOB LOST .going to try it out on a dammed renault when i get time.Also sell the details over the internet ???? no i dont think so iam just glad i have pissed off the local dealers that wanted 200€

That's a very good posibility. If the anti-theft light flashes rapidly when you try to start the car with the suspect key, you will need to have a dealer program the keys. Good Luck and please leave rating.

The chip is in the key. Either the key has lost it's program or the transceiver is not recognising the key. Try another key if you have one.

Taking the vehicle to a qualified repair shop that has the diagnostic tool to read the DTC'S - diagnostic trouble code's . Then they can diagnose the problem . None of the thing's you tried will work , not for anti-theft systems , not suppose to. The computer isn't seeing the correct transponder code or the anti-theft module is the problem . Having the vehicle checked by a qualified service tech is the only way to resolve your problem .

Many Ford trucks, vans and suvs use PATs (passive anti-theft) keys. These keys prevent someone from copying your key to a blank and using the blank. There is a small chip in the key which the vehicle must recognize before it will start.
PATS is Ford Motor Company's passive anti theft system. In 1996 it started showing up on select models of Ford and Lincoln Mercury vehicles. The keys for these vehicles have a tiny radio frequency transponder imbedded in the plastic Head.


When you attempt to start the vehicle, the onboard computer sends out a RF signal that is picked up by the transponder in the key. The transponder then returns a unique RF signal to the vehicle's computer, giving it the ok for the vehicle to start and continue to run. This all happens in less than a second, and is completely transparent to the vehicle operator. It is a very effective system that does its job without the vehicle owner having to think about it, or modify his / her usual routine.

Plus behind the plastic shroud on steering column where the lock cylinder is located the passive anti-theft transceiver module ! You better know what your getting into when you start to mess with anti-theft systems , you can render your vehicle useless if your not careful ! Need factory scanner to program keys , to read trouble codes , check data etc... If you change transceiver module it will need to be programmed ! FORD DEALER ONLY ! You can program more keys but need to have original two keys that came with the vehicle or you can't do it >
Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) -Principles of Operation PATS uses a specially encoded ignition key. Each encoded ignition key contains a permanently installed electronic device called a transponder. Each transponder contains a unique electronic identification code out of over 18 billion, billion combinations.
The passive anti-theft system (PATS), also known as SecuriLock ®, uses radio frequency identification technology to deter a drive-away theft. This system is known as SecuriLock® in North America, Safeguard® in the U.K., and PATS in Continental Europe. Passive means that it does not require any activity from the user.
The SecuriLock® System (PATS) is not compatible with non-Ford aftermarket remote start systems, which allow the vehicle to be started from outside the vehicle. These systems may reduce the vehicle security level, and also may cause no-start issues. If equipped, the remote start system must be removed before investigation of PATS-related, no-start issues.
Each encoded ignition key must be programmed into the vehicle powertrain control module (PCM) before it can be used to start the engine. There are special diagnostic repair procedures described in this section that must be carried out if a new encoded ignition key is necessary.
The correct ignition key is a different design than prior model years. Please consult the Rotunda Key Ordering Guide for the correct part number.
So , before messing with something you know nothing about , do yourself a favor , take it to the nearest FORD dealer !

Explain anti-theft fuse box ! what do you think this is ? There is an anti-theft system on your vehicle , called PATS - passive anti theft system .Sorry , but there is not anti-theft fuse box .

How do I reset the ProLock system?

Hi Carol , do you mean PATS passive antitheft system ? Locked up your car ,do you mean it won't crank over an start ?
The passive anti-theft system uses radio frequency identification technology to deter a driveaway theft. Passive means that it does not require any activity from the user.
  • During each vehicle start sequence, the ignition key identification code is requested by the vehicle protection anti-theft electronics.
  • If the key's ID code has been programmed into the system, the powertrain control module (PCM) (12A650) is signaled to enable the vehicle to start.
  • If the key's ID code is not programmed into the system, or if no encoded key is detected, then the powertrain control module is signaled to disable the vehicle.
The passive anti-theft system communicates the state of the security system to the powertrain control module via the J-1850 communications network data link connector (DLC). The powertrain control modulebased on the communications from the passive anti-theft system, will determine if the vehicle's engine is enabled to start. The passive anti-theft system differs from the active anti-theft alarm system in that the passive anti-theft system enables/disables the vehicle from starting and only operates with the ignition switch in RUN/START position. The active anti-theft alarm system has perimeter protection capabilities and operates only with the ignition switch OFF. Refer to Section 13-11A for active anti-theft alarm system information.
Vehicle Disabling The passive anti-theft system will be activated and disable the vehicle from starting if any of the following conditions exist:
  • damaged encoded key
  • unprogrammed key
  • non-encoded key (key has no electronics)
  • wiring concern
  • transceiver concern

ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM Passive anti-theft system
Your ignition key has a unique imbedded transponder which engages engine electronics and allows the vehicle to be started. Without the use of your special ignition key, the vehicle will not start.

During each vehicle start, the coded key is read by the anti-theft system. If the key’s ID code matches the code in the anti-theft system, the vehicle is enabled to start.

Briefly illuminates when the ignition is turned to the ON position to verify that the passive anti-theft system is operating properly.

Also, its possisble that tou have actovated the fuel pump switch.

It sounds like the vehicle is in theft mode,did you use a different key? Does the theft light blink really fast with the key off?If the passive anti-theft system has been activated the computer will have to be reset in order to get the vehicle running again.

This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to include the 1999 Cougar . ISSUE: The ignition key may be difficult to insert or remove and/or key chimes may sound with the ignition key removed and driver's door open on some vehicles. This may be caused by internal design characteristics in the ignition lock cylinder increasing insertion/removal efforts which may allow the lock cylinder to stick.
ACTION: Install a revised ignition lock cylinder. The revised ignition lock cylinder should reduce the possibility of high insertion/removal efforts and ensure proper chime function. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
  1. Verify customer concern.
  2. Observe the ignition lock cylinder as the key is removed. If the lock cylinder snaps outward to the non-depressed position and the chimes stop sounding, continue to Step 3. If it does not snap outward, replace the ignition lock cylinder with the appropriate cylinder by referring to the Parts Block in this article.
  3. Insert and remove the ignition key from the lock cylinder. If binding or high efforts are encountered, replace the ignition lock cylinder.
  4. From the Parts Block, select a lock cylinder with a part number suffix identical to the center character of the key code of the vehicle. The suffix must match the center key code character to maintain a single key system.
  5. Install the replacement lock cylinder, by referring to the 1998 Contour/Mystique Workshop Manual, Section 211-05 or the 1999 Cougar Workshop Manual, Section 211-04.
