2002 Hyundai Elantra 5 speed manual does not shift into 5th or reverse.

Car has 85,000 miles on it, but does not shift into 5th or reverse. Anyway to determine cause without having whole transmission taken apart? Shifts great and runs great in 1st thru 4th gears with no sound or problems.

I would say no,has to come apart

    There is a shoe or bushing in the linkage on top of the transmission that lisp fits the linkage in the tranny to the proper location for it to go into 5th and reverse. I have a 2002 Elantra that had the same issue. I found the shoe on eBay and that’s the only place I found any info on it

Most likely the o-ring seal between the torque converter and the transmission is going bad. Get that transmission rebuilt pronto before serious damage is done! But first, have a mechanic drop the transmission pan and look for signs of a very thin silvery film coating the inside of the pan. If found, then the transmission definitely will have to be rebuilt, and the torque converter will also have to be replaced since embedded metallic particles in the old torque converter will eventually come loose, due to wear of the clutch plates within the torque converter, and eat up the rebuilt transmission. Now, here is the deal once the transmission has been rebuilt:

Change the transmission fluid and filter once a year -- no matter what! If you do this, then you should never have any more problems with the transmission.

DTC P0734 is "4th gear incorrect ratio" - that's your torque converter 'LOCK UP Clutch" It's worn out (or you're using the wrong Trans Fluid required by Hyundai - SPIII OR Both). The P1624 is simply the Trans Control Unit (computer) communicating to the Engine Control Module (ECM computer) MIL - on request signal to ECM = asking it to turn on "Check Engine" light. MIL = Malfunction Indicator Lamp. When the torque converter 'lock up" clutch slips or doesn't engage, the trans automatically returns to 3rd gear and stays there (it's called 'fail safe' mode) until you cycle the ignition key, then everything resets until the malfunction occurs again.
You'll need to have an AT (Automatic Transaxel) tester hooked up to verify this. Hyundai has a Service Bulletin specifically for "gear incorrect ratio' codes. If when you changed the trans fluid, was it done at a Hyundai Service Center? If not, someone may have installed the wrong fluid.

Does the Check Engine light come ON when this happens? Whenever the "Check Engine" light comes on, there is always a DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) stored in the ECM (Engine Control Module). You'll need an OBDII (On-Board-Diagnostics) scanner to retrieve any codes recorded/set in ECM. Once you do this and let us know what, if any codes are set, then we can go from there.

Transmission is sluggish accelerating at 25- 30mph. Does fine at slower and higher speeds. What could be going on?

2000 elantra. I have to first put the transmition In drive then back to reverse to get reverse to engauge? Also the car will not goto overdrive. It has 118000 miles on it.

the shift band or the switch is bad replace the switch first and if that do not work its time for a rebuild or just the trans get a new shift band put in any way hope this helps.

Stick shift

Hi:
The shift pattern is pretty much the same on all 5 speed cars. The top row is the odd numbers, 1-3-5
the bottom row is 2-4-Reverse. The center position is neutral

Here is the key: The shifter is slightly spring-loaded to the center position. If you hold in the clutch pedal and pull the shifter to neutral, and let go of it, it will automatically be lined up in the position, that if you pushed it forward , it would go to 3rd gear, and if you pulled it back, it would go into 4th gear.
This way, to start driving, you start out in neutral, grab the shifter lightly, and push it first to the left, then forward. This is first gear, where you start out. when you want to shift to second, push in the clutch, and keeping left pressure on the shifter, pull all the way back . Here is the easy part, 2nd to 3rd. When you are ready, push in the clutch, and just push the gear shift forward , till it hits neutral, and is spring loaded to the middle. Then you just push it straight forward to 3rd, then next shift, straight back to 4th.
Last gear, 5th: push forward to the neutral row, then Push to the right till it lines up ,and forward to the 5th gear. Reverse should only be shifted into from a dead stop. Find neutral, push the shifter all the way right, then pull back towards you. Hope this helps.

Wont go into 5th gear

I am going to assume this is a manual transmission, if it is 5th and reverse are on the same selector set, the only solution is to strip the transmission and check out whats broken.
