Why does the engine become sluggish when A/C is running?

Engine is a little sluggish when going up hill anyway, but when running the A/C it becomes very sluggish and will stall if idling with A/C running.

I noticed that the battery has liquid and some white powdery stuff on it. Could this in any way be related to the sluggish motor when using the A/C?

The air conditioner runs off of the motor and takes a good deal of power away from it. I ALWAYS shut my air off when preparing to pass a vehicle or getting on an on ramp.Unless you have a diesel or a V 8 the air conditioner will affect your performance of the motor greatly.

If you recently replaced the battery, you may need to reset the idle air control valve setting. This is done by removing the NEGATIVE battery wire from the battery while the vehicle is HOT. Then you must wait several hours for the vehicle engine to become cold. Next, once could, reconnect the negative cable. Start the vehicle, place your foot on the brake and imediately put the vehicle in drive. Stay in that situation until the vehicle engine bcomes hot to normal temperature range. This will be known by hearing the radiator cooling fan turning on. You must NOT use the airconditioner during this cause it will be on during the event. Once accomlplished place in park and allow the engine to cool, engine off. This resets the engine computer to tell the idle/load speed control valve to add air and resuling in additional fuel to the engine under various torque loads.

If the engine seems to run fine over 1450 RPM maybe there is a vacuum hose leaking or EGR valve is slightly stuck open. Any help from the OBD II trouble codes? Or is there simply no MIL and no stored information in the OBD II computer read at the local parts store through the connector by the drivers knee?

Sounds like you have two issues. Your car is running a bit sluggish and the ac compressor running compounds the problem You may want to start with a tune up. Plugs and wires for sure. See if that adds some horsepower back to your vehicle. Have you compressor checked. If your compressor is really faulty and hampering the the serpentine belt from functioning properly the sensors could be sensing your car just about ready to stall and even though your car may not stall the check engine light may come on for just a couple seconds and then go back off. Let me know if this helps.

Bring it to Auto zone parts store to check if any trouble codes are present they will hook up a scanner for free, the code if present will point you in the right direction if no codes are present the car most likely needs a tune up, when these vehicles get older the fuel injectors become less efficient and need professional cleaning, O2 sensors should be changed every 60 to 80,000 miles whether the check engine light is on or not.

This could be a problem with your plugs or plug wires, throttle position sensor. Did you just put some new tires on? When you put tires/wheels on that are bigger than was originally on there then it can rob power from the engine. Another thing that I would check would be for vacuum leaks. Hook a vacuum gauge up to a vacuum port on the engine and read the gauge. That will give you a better idea about what is really going on vacuumwise. Hope this helps.
