Timing chain tensioner and or guides
Hi Paula well so far you've been given good advice lifter noise is a very fast ticking sound a bad bearing would sound like either a constant grinding with a high pitched whining or like a rock rolling in a can with maybe a chirping belt but this could also be your water pump bearing so if you can't get a guy to help find the problem and fix it you must go-to a mechanic and have it done either of these things will cause your truck to breakdown so it's better to fix it now then to have to after a tow truck and your at the mercy of somebody somewhere in a place that you really don't want to be at so fix it now or rent a car for the trip ok and fix it when you get back that's a better roll of the dice if it's a chance you have to take then a rental is the way you could lay out big money for repairs and still be on the side of the road screaming so stay calm and think what choice is best for you try a friend who knows a mechanic they use or rent a car good luck all of us here can only take a guess without being there to see it for ourselves so the dice are in your hands now once again good luck Stephen

A rattling in the engine bay could very likely be a bad belt tensioner bearing. You need to isolate where the noise is originating. An easy way to do this is to use a piece of round wood like a broom handle or a long metal rod. Carefully place one end on a part of the engine or an accessory. Pit the other end to your ear. Be careful of moving parts! The noise you will hear sounds like rocks rolling around in a can. This is the sound of bad bearings. You may also be able to see the belt tensioner vibrating. There are also belt idler that may have bad bearings also. I have found both in the same vehicle.
It is going to be practically impossible to diagnose the noise without hearing it and hearing where the noise originates.
Take it to a shop (or two ? ) and get their opinion.
I say 'or two' because some shops see a woman and say 'ka-ching.'

i have a 2001 ford taurus and it did the same thing a while back, call the dealer and ask them for the sensor that is behind the brake pedal. It is not the transmission .. cost less that 25 bucks to fix and takes about 20 min
SOURCE: squeaky noise coming from engine will driving
yes, it could be the idler pulley going bad.
check it out
or the belt itself is almost done.
replace belt every 50,000 miles

Easy Fix! I know exactly what ur talking about, had the same problem for ******* ever, and its not the fuel pump, trust me!!! and it will cost you absolutely nothing to fix! I don't know what the hell they're called exactly, but on the right side of your engine there's a black box, next to where you put the coolant in, with fuses in it. They look like one inch cubes and will say Ford right on top. One of them is for the fuel pump. Try switching it with one of the others, or just switching all of them around and ur car will fire up, but the one that's not working will cause something else not to work properly, but at least u'll now what the problem is. Than just do what I did: take one with you and go to a junk yard and pull out a bunch, they're the same on many ford vehicles, even the newer ones, like 2000, not just the explorer. Make sure its the same one, pull out a bunch, put em in ur pocket and leave without paying, nobody will notice anyways, but they're tricky to find at a parts store, surprisingly. When ur car is running beatiful again, come back to this post and tell me if I was right! God knows how many ours I spent in that car stranded, waiting for it to fire up. Sometimes it'd be 5 minutes, sometimes an hour, sometimes hours, even days. Never knew when it would or wouldn't. Thought is was the starter too! If it works, tell me!!!

catalytic converter is probably rattling, they do that when they are on the way out, performance will be effected, as it block's, engine cant exhaut properly !

When catalytic converters go bad, the porcelain matrix inside comes loose and is noisy.
But you can just unbolt it, break up the loose chunks, pour out the pieces, and it will run better than ever.
If you don't pass the next emissions test, then replace it.
But it could just be the heat shield rattling instead.
Take the shield off first, to see if it goes away.
