1996 Grand Cherokee keyless entry problem

I lost the remote to my Jeep alarm system, so I bought a new one from the dealer. I have followed the instruction I found online for my Jeep, but I cannot get the remote to program. The alarm system on the Jeep is activated, killing the engine and flashing the lights and sounding the horn. Is the fact that the alarm has been activated preventing the romote from programming? If so,how can I reset the alarm?

Thanks Mac442. I tried for hours to do it myself, I feel better knowing that there is a good reason I couldn't do it. On top of the $70 they charged me for a $5 remote, the charged me $60 for the two minutes it took to program it. Than they told me my battery was junk and the car would not run with it, and would gladly put a battery in it for $225. I told him I would replace batteries all day for $225 each. I went out ot my car, started it right up, and drove it away, no problems since....

This doesn't make any sense. It says right in the manual that you are able to program the thing. For me, the programming instructions just don't work. I don't know if it's because I have remote that is for the wrong system or what. It looks identical and came with the car (I just bought a 93 JGC Laredo). One reomote works but it's about to fall apart and I would really like to program the other one but all the instructions I find online don't seem to work. What the F!

That remote should not be able to  be programmed by you, it needs to be programmed by the dealer using their computer.  I know that some later and earlier models can be programmed by the user, but I did some research on this as i have a 96 as well and it seems the 96 was a dealer computer thing.  If you in fact bought the remote from the dealer they should be willing to program it for FREE.  Otherwise I was given a $30 estimate for the programming.

Wow, the dealer should have programmed it for free since you bought it from them (my dealer did), in fact they should have told you that they would need to do the programming in the first place when you bought it.  $225 for a Battery?  These dealers must be desperate for money. If you suspect that something is indeed wrong with the battery (why?), your local auto parts store will test it for free and some will install them less than half that price.  Glad I could help, sorry it cost you so much, that's ridiculous.

2001 jeep grand cherokee limited is armed but lost keyless entry remote and wont start. is there anyway to bypass alarm so it will start?

Usually you can lock all the doors. Open the drivers door with the key, this will unarm the security. If not, try the passenger side.

Bought from dealer with no keyless entry. alarm activates when doors are locked with power doorlock system. alarm sounds when we open the door. how do we de-activate the alarm before unlocking the door?

Opening the drivers door with the key is supposed to shut down the factory security but the drivers key cylinder usually goes bad. You will have to unlock the rear tail gate lock cylinder with the key and that will shut down the factory security, before opening the drivers door.Your other option is to have an aftermarket keyless entry system installed, which will open the doors remotely while shut down the factory security at the same time.
