1998 Ford Expedition XLT Eddie Bauer truck kicks/stutters after I take my foot off accelerator at 70mph-why?

1998 Ford Expedition XLT Eddie Bauer truck. This past weekend, my husband and I did some highway driving, approx. 50 miles, or so to grab a bite to eat at one of our favorite restaurants. When I pulled into the parking spot and put the truck in park, the truck stuttered and then stalled. I tried to start the truck again several times and it did not start. After letting the truck rest for about 20 minutes, I tried again and the truck started right up with no problems. From that point, my husband and I brought it to a nearby gas station, filled it with gas, checked all of the fluids and added some engine coolant as we found that it was low. We then drove back home the 50 miles without any issues. I called my mechanic when I got home and he said that it could be the battery since I have not had my battery replaced in nearly 2 years and the excessive heat sometimes does damage (as it was 101 degrees that weekend). The next morning, I went to get my battery changed, the mechanic said he checked the alternator as well to make sure there were no issues with that. This morning, while I was driving to work on the highway, the truck was driving great, however once I reached 70 mph and then took my foot off the accelerator, the truck seemed to kick/stutter a bit. I didn't want to push it any further because I didn't know what would happen, so I continued to drive to work at 65mph and got there with no problem. Why would my car kick like that when I took my foot off the accelerator?

You need to have the engine control computer scanned for fault codes, if nothing shows then it is very possible you have a failing fuel pump.

I proceed with cauation when advising the owner to repair when they have never repaired before. Yes, your problem may very well be a thermostat, but it could also be a blown head gasket.

With the engine running, check the tail pipe to see if there are any water dropplets coming out. if there is, it is A good sign of a blown head gasket.

Replacing a thermostat is not a simple as one would think. Even before changing a thermostat or anything for that matter, you need to have a pressure test done on the cooling system. This is a small pump that one attaches to the radiator and applies pressure to the cooling system to see if there are any leaks.

I would recommend this. Take you van to an independent repair shop and talk to the manager and tell him that you want a correct diagnosis first, even if you have to pay for it. Many shops will diagnosis the problem and charge you a standard fee. It is then up to you to decide what you want to do from there.

Remember, the correct approach to any problem is a correct diagnosis.

Do not tell the shop owner what you think is the problem or what you think should be changed. Just tell them how it acts and then let them earn their money, but above all, emphazise the fact that all you want is a diagnosis.

SOURCE: Engine stuttering

have you replaced your O2 censor yet? or changed your air filter lately. I know our avenger is pretty picky we had a dirty air filter once and it seemed like the O2 censor went out because it kept trying to shut off when the idle was lower. a new air filter did a bit for it then we got a censor reader that you plug into the brain box of the car or the cigarette lighter and it told us the O2 was out and our car was doing the low idle thing. after we fixed it no problems.

This is what you need to do, change the plug wires, because if there is a bad wire you would definitely experiences sputter or a stutter, so do the plug wires and at the same time do the spark plugs, this should take care of your problem. if not let me know and i will give you the next step

Testimonial: "So far the car is working fine after I replaced the spark plugs and wires! Thanks so much!"

I have a 1997 Ford expedition Eddie Bauer edition that is vibrating when accelerating to a certain speed

could be a engine mount, any engine setting out of line will add more load to the engine mount movement, air leak in manifold, bad spark. it could als be something as simple as a thrown wheel balance or the balance on drive shaft balancer is out of sync, or missing.

Location of Shift Solenoid in 1999 Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer?

They are round "cans" with wires attached. You should have SSA, SSB, SSC, Torque converter and Pressure Control solenoids. They control pressures and have no mechanical linkage.

The only way to find out is to take it to a mechanic who has an engine analyzer and the rubbing could be caused by a loose mudshield (or a dozen other things).
