hi, hankguy 's solution seems really interesting but i have the same problem and i wonder if he can explain why a faulty spring would perform better with heat or after driving a few miles?

I would try a flush. If its set up like my 96, and it likely is, changing the trasmission gasket and filter will be difficult. Mine has a medal plug on the bottom and takes an allen wrench, and possibly a breaker bar. If you take out this plug, drain, flush then refill via the dipstick tube and a funnel, it may help. You may need to do this a couple of times due to fluid still in the torque converter, pan, etc.
Lucas is good stuff, I would add it again when I was done. The tranny fluid should be pink, mine looked like used oil black before I flushed it.
Also, when adding the new fluid, shift slowly up and down through all of the gears to lube well and check your fluid levels after 100 miles or so, as sometimes a bubble will form and make it look full....then not after it pops.

There is a repair kit for the AT in this model that fixes the problem of harsh shifting from first gear. It is a spring for one of the AT valves. It is available at a Mazda dealer and there is a service bulletin that accompanies it. I wouldn't recommend any type of additive in the ATF since I had the experience of it foaming in the torque converter at high speed. Clean ATF is high detergent already, the additives just swell the seals which are not a problem with this transmission. I have 300K on mine and it is still going without an overhhual, just changing the filter and fluid when the color changes.

You might check your mounts. When an engine is cold, it has a higher idle, hence more torque when shifting. If a mount is broken, it will feel like a hard shift. Raise the hood. Start the car. Through the windshield watch the engine. Put the car in gear and hold the brake. Slowly try to accelerate. If the engine raises up then flops down when you let off the gas a mount is broken. Try it in both forward and reverse. Careful to lock on the brake so you do not move and do not give too much gas.

2004 Mazda Protege Transmission Issues

Transmission speed sensor loss of signal will not allow torque converter lock up (no overdrive). Transmission filter should be serviced at 80,000 miles. Perform an OBDII scan for stored fault history. The scan should show any issues with trans. sensors or solenoids that can be addressed during trans. service. Let the ODBII scan be your guide to any repairs to avoid buying parts you don't need.

Ihave a 1997 mazda protege and after having it for a week I noticed the transmission will slip when going into 3rd gear (automatic transsion) the fuid is brown and I was worried about really messing things...

.One of the most common causes of a slipping transmission is a low automatic transmission fluid level, also a dirty and/or clogged automatic transmission filter can impede the normal flow of automatic transmission fluid throughout an automatic transmission and cause the transmission to slip. Adequate, unobstructed transmission fluid flow is necessary for the optimal operation and function of an automatic transmission, including the function of the transmission bands and gears, two transmission components that routinely cause transmission slippage.Another cause would be faulty torque converter action and maladjusted transmission band.

My 2000 Protege is a manual shift. Just recently, when I'm in 1st gear and I let the clutch out, the car awkwardly hops forwardly. I quickly shift into 2nd and that gear is fine. Why is my car doing this...

Sound like first gear is going out on you. It could also be an issue with the clutch. If the car has enough power try to take off in second gear and see if it hopes. If it doesn't there's likely a problem with first. Unless you are a certified auto mechanic, it's probably best to bring it in and have them conferm that it is a problem with the gear and have them take care of it. It might mean replacing the transmission.

1997 Mazda protege LX 1.5 automatic transmission

You are going to need a transmission shop. Mazdas do not always throw codes. You have an early OBD transmission, which do not send out many codes.

I have a 2001 mazda protege automatic transmission. As i drive it seems like someone just shifted the car in neutral, after a couple of seconds it kicks in gear and drives, but the same thing happens...

It is possible that your transmission fluid needs to be changed. Get that done, and it that does not solve your problem you may have transmission problems all together.
Hope this helps
