2005 X-Type 2.0 Diesel. Black smoke produced on heavy acceleration no smoke when travelling at constant speed, fast or slow. Gentle acceleration produces little or no smoke. Black smoke preceded by a breezy/blowing sound. No smoke when idling. An air current can be felt above the cambelt when the engine is revved. Any ideas

The inter cooler takes in unused fuel cools it and puts it back into the engine . so its black and oily it will be mucky around the crack. have a look with the engine running . you said you could feel air around the cam belt? around that area push and pull hoses and pipes etc . see if you can locate the problem that way. if you do . cean it off well . i did and used 2" wide tape to seal it up . if this helps rate me thanks joe
It got a split in the intercooler pipe replace it and no more smoke. It at the front left of the engine attached to the EGR valve and is about 3inch wide
Have your anorobic switch on the diesel checked; it most likely is clogged; also water filter can cause this
has a slight jerking/juddering when driving
. The engine management light is not illuminated and there seems to be plenty of power there when accelerating.plz let me no a.s.a.p plz can you put pictures of the problems

Sorry I'm no mechanic, I don't know what an intercooler is. Trawling through all the threads I can find cracked/split hoses have been mentioned alongside an EGR valve.
Thanks, I'll have a look tomorrow. Does air blowing out from somewhere in this area when the engine is revved mean there ia an air leak? Thanks Ian.
Thanks Joe, It was split hose to the intercooler. My mechanic was impressed with my diagnosis. Word of warning though for anyone else, although this is a quick cheap fix, not getting fixed can lead to serious problems and you should drive very carefully, low revs, until fixed. Apparently this hose problem is common and the part is now improved.

Change of the intercooler solved the issue. It was internally damaged. No more smoke and better response since replacement. rgds
Same - smoke on accleration. Also judders a little when steady speed downhill.
could be the inter cooler is cracked i had a similiar problem with my car. do you know where it is ?
of no use to me as I'm after a solution for a lawnmower not a car
