Question about 2000 Volvo S40

Open Question

Fuel pump or Transmission?

I have a 2000 volvo s40, when i first start the car and put it into reverse the car jumps a little and feels like its sliding. but it only happens when the engines cold. when i reach 3500 rpm's on the highway the car does the same thing and starts to loose power. the same thing happens when i turn on the a/c when im doing about 60mph with the cruise control set. I think this may be the fuel pump or transmission?

SOURCE: 2001 Volvo s40/ takes 5-10 seconds to start.

fuel filter is at right side of gas tank undernieth car
by pumping the gas all you are doing is opening the throttle plates alowing some air.its not uncomin for injection cars with higher mileage to need alittle more air for start up.
check ECT sensor.
clean throttle plates
is check engine light on?

My 1998 Volvo does the same sometimes. Better petrol helps for me, these engines like the higher octane petrol. My car does not like the BP petrol at all for example.

SOURCE: 1985 Volvo 240 no fuel no spark

well first the fuel pump relay is bad, that is easily replaced. next you have no spark. the first thing you do is take the cap off the distributerand crank the engine. if it spins that tell syou thyat at least the tang or gear on the shaft of the distributor is ok and not broken. next thing is remove the #1 plug and use a 1/4 drive extension 6" long and turn the crank by hand until the #1 cylinder is top dead center(put the extension in the hole of head where the plug was and you should feel the top of the piston also make sure you can feel the top of the piston with half the extension this way you don't drop it in the cylinder with the piston at TDC(top dead center) the rotor of the distributor should be pointed at the #1 firing position. IF it does not that means your timing is off and you need to retime it by taking off timing cover and either replacing the belt/chain or gears. now if you do not have a distributor and you have a coil pack there could be only 2 things that won't give spark. either a bad coil or your altenater is bad(the battery is responsible for starting not running the vehicle like alot of people assume. the altenator energizes the coil which inturngives spark. hope this helps you please rate this thanks

Option 1 the easiest way is to jump the fuel pump relay with the fuel feed line at the engine disconnected from the engine and connected to some sort of catch basin (bucket, gas can, etc.) this allows you to use the vehicles fuel pump to drain the fuel. All you have to do is find the fuel pump relay, then jump the positive side (key off) to power to make the fuel pump run, use that to pump all the bad fuel out.

Option 2 is to remove the filler neck and check valve from the tank (a real pain on that car)

Option 3 is to remove and drain the tank... this is the most costly and time consuming option as the alldata labor guide quotes 8 hours labor time.. so i would advise option 1

As for damage to the vehicle/engine that is always possible with a contaminated fuel, my advice would be just to get the bad fuel out as soon as possible, get good gas in it and give it a try.

The humming is the fuel pump still on while vehicle is off,did someone work on your car recently, cos this sounds like symptoms of a fuel pump that has been connected directly.

Trying to figure out what is wrong with my my 2000 volvo s40 its wont start when i turn the key it just clicks is it the battery or could it be the starter

A weak battery will make the "clicking" sound you hear, also bad connections, loose battery cables or worn battery cables. Jump start the car to see if it cranks, if it does, charge or replace battery.

How do you change a fuel pump regulator in a 2001 Volvo s40?

The fuel pressure regulator is located in the fuel rail, held in by a torx screw.

Release pressure from the system by cranking the car with the fuel pump fuse out, or byt depressing the relief valve on the end of the fuel rail.
Unbolt the regulator/housing assembly, unhook the vacuum hose, and remove the regulator/housing assembly.

Installation is reverse order.

If you need to replace the regulator that is located in the fuel pump, it is not serviceable. Luckily they rarely fail.

I don't know what are the buttons in the middle of the seats

They stand for SPORT and WINTER.

They change the shift points for the transmission. SPORT holds the shifts a little longer for a sportier feel. WINTER starts out in second gear to reduce wheel slippage on ice and snow.
