Usually means the drain tube is plugged up. There should be a tube under the floor that drains to the ground.

If you do not run even one level of performance as the needed engine control unit, check fuses! If they are okay, the fan is defective! is a frequent defect no only X5 E53 series

pls. check your ac compressor magnetic clutch attached in front of ur compressor if its working/ ac clutch engage when u turn the ac switch on and disengage when u turn the ac switch off/ it normally makes a clacking sound when it engage with the rotation of ur compressor/ if its not engaging it means ur magnetic clutch is stuck up giving excessive load to ur engine thats why it overheats/ it smell burnt because its magnetic coil is fried/ or check cooling system of ur car might be that coolant is empty/ fan is not working/ radiator is clogged or thermostatic valve is stuck blocking coolant flow....

if fan only has high speeed selection only but no other speeds then its probably the fan voltage resistor witch parts cost is about 80.00. or if you dont have any speeds working at all then check the fuses it might be the fan motor or the control panel on dash

There seems no other option but to replace with a new UNIT as the performance will be good.
If the old one is overhauled it might not work as good as with a new one with a guarantee.
Hence the OE part can be odered from BMW and replaced under the supervision of the service center to give you the warranty support.
If it a N62, it is on the underside of the vehicle, next to the oil drain plug. Its the black plastic housing with a 6mm allen bolt in it(thats used to drain the oil out before removal)
