Location of temperature sensor that operates the temperature gauge

Follow the upper rad hose to the thermostat housing. It will be there. There are two, one is the ECT (engine coolant temperature SENSOR) and the other is the temperature SENDING UNIT (input for temp. gauge ONLY). f83e91b9-4b48-476a-8c50-10735b376bf1.png

When my 2001 dodge stratus is cold and warms up the temperature gauge goes all the up too extreme hot then eventually comes down to normal. Is this a bad thermostat?

It sounds like a possible "sticking" thermostat.
I'd maybe flush the system and replace the thermostat just to be safe.
The cost of a gallon of antifreeze, a new thermostat, and some blue silicone gasket maker is a whole lot cheaper than replacing parts of an engine that overheats and warps...

Type of coolant for 05 stratus sxt

Any standard antifreeze coolant will work. If you live in the lower Midwest USA as I do, you can actually mix regular antifreeze 50/50 with water and you run no risk of it freezing. Detailed mixing instructions should be available on most antifreeze containers.
Best of luck.

1999 Dodge Stratus is leaking antifreeze

Hi brandononrolan,
If you can smell antifreeze from the inside of the car it is most likely the heater core.  You can probably feel under the passenger side floor mat and it will probably be wet with coolant..
Replacement is a fairly large job because the dash has to be disassenbled.  I would guess at between 300 and 500 dollars.
You should have a local mechanic take a look at it before you buy and get an estimate.
Let me know if this helps in your decision and please rate this solution.

per the Haynes manual for the 95-05 Dodge Stratus on the 2.0L & 2.4L DOHC 4 cyl engines, the oil pressure sending unit is located at the left end of the rear side of the block. On 2.4L SOHC 4 cyl engines, the sending unit is located at the left end of the rear side of the block. On 2.5L & 3.0L V6 engines, the sending unit is located on the oil filter housing, on the front side of the block. On 2.7L V6 engines, the sending unit is located at the left end of the rear side of the block. To access it, remove the heat shield.
