How do i replace a broken hood latch cable 2002 toyota camry

problem with latch --sticking cable broke --pull broke etc this info can help qet a better answer ---pull broken use pliers and pull on cable --cable broken will need to use a long screwdriver or skinny arm to get by the grill and pop latch or pull release and bang or push down on hood not enough to dent but to jar latch

Under the car with a pry bar. Look where the cable goes. You will have to remove under car cowlings.

OK, if the cable is the part that broke AND it broke at the handle, then you can use a pliers or vise grip to grab the end and pull on it to pop the hood, if it broke somewhere inside the cable, then you will need some needle nosed pliers to reach under the hood and grab it there. if it broke off at the hood latch itself, then you will need to get/ make a hook or pushing rod to engage the mechanism directly to release the latch and then replace the cable the latch looks like this:

in the car at the handle that broke you can grab the cable with visegrips or pliers and pull on the cable it should release the hood or with a long screw driver under the bumper push the release at the latch

You can access the hood latch from the grill. With a pair of needle nose, and a screw driver you can manipulate the mechanism and open the hood. Good luck

I just used a flat head screwdriver and went in through the grill... one opening from top. Vertically placed screwdriver just behind where latch cable enters hood latch. (Looks like a "J" shape metal part). I placed minimal pressure pushing handle toward passenger side and hood released right away. Just did this 5 min ago after interior latch release broke off.

On my 2002 s10 the small clip on the hood latch where the cable end attaches to the lever was broken.I finally drove a 3/4" mop handle and by prying,forced the grill down enough to unbolt the hood latch and after messing with it for a while I was able to reach behind the latch and press on it enough to drop the latch off the pin.Sure hope I don't ever have to do it again.

see if you can remove the release cable fron the behind the latch. Once removed, you can hold the cable tube with one hand and pull on the cable with another hand releasing the hood. Hopefully this helps!!

Solved it. Found a small shank screwdriver that fitted into the opening with a little bending of the plastic frame. managed to replace it with a new one without trouble. No further help needed. dave
