try checking the fuse box for blown fuses, if all fuses are ok, then the lightbulbs behind the dash need to be changed

AC units in vehicles are sensative components. It is highly recommended that a certified mechanic recharge or repair your system. As I recommend to others for system problems and malfunctions, I suggest taking your car to a mechanic or local auto parts store and have a diagnostics test done to determine what this problem (if any) is found. It may just be the switch in the swtich board behind the dash. You mentions a noise and a smell, which to me, indicates that the compressor (AC pump) is now faulty, however this will only be determined upon diagnosis by a certified mechanic.

I had a problem with my 1997 corolla: The car would squeal and stall on start up if the ac was on, and would still squeal if the ac was off. It seems that the clutch in the ac compressor was stalling the engine on start up. I just cut the belt off and it seems to work fine (w/o ac).
