To clarify, if the engine cranks or turns over but won't start, look for a stuck pulley on the engine. You may be hearing the belt slipping on that pulley. Take the belt off and try turning each pulley - also try starting the engine with the belt off.

SOURCE: 1994 Buick Regal 3800 shut off periodically and now won't turn on

Sounds like you need an internal inspection of the engine. Valves, lifters, rods. pistons and rings etc. One of the worst things for cars is to let them sit for years.

SOURCE: screech in engine. after serpentine belt stops

Check if screeching is related to engine vacuum.
Briefly remove (or loosen off) the oil filler cap - if noise immediately stops high crankcase vacuum is the cause. Check / replace PCV valve to fix.
If above is not the cause, listen with a short length of hosepipe to try and narrow down noise source.
Silicon lube spray or pencil lead graphite on a selected belt should cause sound change if it's caused by that belt.

SOURCE: knocking noise coming from belt area. when belt

It is very common for the harmonic balancer on these to fail and it sounds like an engine knock. It almost stops when you remove the belt. With belt removed, try to turn harmonic balancer, if it turn back and forth, it is bad. You need to replace it.

SOURCE: 91 ROADMASTER WONT START.FUEL PUMPS

usually they will not throw a code, check to see if the car is getting spark when trying to start, if not just replace crank sensor and should be fine.

Does it crank at all? put a wrench or socket on the crank shaft. Turn it clockwise. If it doesn't move, it is locked up. Replace the engine.

Ignition causing clicking noise when starting and has caused a slow start. Not the battery or alternator

Have the battery tested at a local autoparts store. The voltage may read good until you try and put a load on it, like cranking your car. If you had a meter on it when trying to crank it, you might see the voltage drop way down. This would indicate a bad battery.

Hi,
9 Volts is not enough voltage for this vehicle. It needs a jump start. Then have the charging checked. It sounds like your alternator hasn't been charging correctly or the battery has finally given up.
Battery can do these sorts of things so have these 2 areas checked.
Let me know how you get on.
Thanks

Starter motor cranks well but emits a horrible screeching noise as it comes to rest after starting engine.. I suspect the bushing in gearbox housing. Anyone experienced this prob. Regards Warren

actually this sound to me as to be the kick out bearing on the starter itself. after it has been on the car for a few years they tend to get moisture into the outer bearing on the starter this washes the grease out over time and it makes a horrible growling, screeching, or rubbing noise after starting. this starter should be replaced in the near future if not it will seize up and just click when trying to start the car....... I hope this has been helpful.

97 Neon Expresso, Schreeching Fan

Both your air con and defogger (I am assuming you mean front windshield defroster setting, and not the back window) engage the air conditioner pump/compressor.

The screeching can be either a bad belt or a bad compressor.

How long has it been since the belt was changed? If it is old, and slipping, it will cause the screech at speed.
If the belt has recently been changed, and is adjusted properly, I would start looking that the air compressor pump.
