I left my lights on in my 2003 VW Golf the other night. I went out the next day, turned off the lights, the car wouldn't start. We tried jump starting my car today and the lights (dash, interior and headlights) came back on, but the engine won't turn over. Then, after trying to jump start again, I tried to turn the key and there was a clicking noise and all of the lights starting flickering, but the engine still wouldn't turn over.

key off and out, diconnect negitive side of battrey then postive.clean terimals, charge battrey, connect postive cable (with key off)connect negitive.and start.
your dead battrey is taking up a big load on system,so when you boost it the dead battrey is taking it all the starter is geeting vey little.thats the clicking.
if you dont have a charger dicconect both terminals the same way again, put the jumper cables on the dead battrey.let it charge battrey for 10 15 mins .the longer the better.remover jumpers.
with key off and out conected battrey terminals.connect jumper cables and start.
let me know if it start or not hopefully the key hasnt lost its coding.

while this occurs; do you hear clicking near your right foot area while sitting in the drivers seat? it may be heard very faint (you may have to remove the sound barrier panel under the dash first. Does this problem only happen with "Automatic" lights? Does it happen while in the parking lamps position? I wish to suggest the light switch itself, or the connector at that switch may be loose, or the negative supplying the switch could be loose. But more likely, you should check for a defective BCM, or loose connections to it, located between the lower left of the ash tray area and the accerator petal area (the relay inside on the circuit board may have a bad solder connection to it) ... or the relay inside is bad period.

Had a similar problem with my 01. It was the turn signal toggle. I replaced it with one that I got from a junk yard for about $45. It was really simple to replace, just pop off the collar around the steering wheel and the toggle is held in but 2 screws and a connector. Hope this helps.
