OK. First off. I took my 2001 Toyota Tacoma (Manual, 2.4L, 2 wheel drive) into the shop because it would miss fire at idle and would hesitate a bunch when I would try to accelerate quickly. The auto shop replaced spark plugs, ignition coils, cleaned throttle body. Had a PO100 MAF Circuit fault Code and a PO110 Intake Air Temperature (IAT) Sensor 1 Circuit code. Got it back. Truck ran a bit better but was still miss firing at idle and was still stumbling a bit on quick acceleration. Took it back to the shop. They then changed the fuel filter. They also then changed the radiator because I had a leak in it. After they did this they then said they had a problem with the truck stalling immediately upon start up. They kept for about 2 weeks trying to figure out the problem. They changed the Cam Sensor and the Crank Sensor. They said it was starting again even though it still miss fires a bit at idle and still hesitates on quick acceleration. Drove my truck about 3 days then Friday morning had trouble with the truck stalling on start up. After about 20 tries it finally started and I drove it back to the shop (3rd time now) and told them it was stalling on start up. So they kept it for another week. Called me a week later stating that it seemed to be starting fine and to bring it back if I have any problems again. So I picked it up again. Drove it for about 3 days again. The next Friday morning it stalls again on start up. Only this time it will not start. It cranks and starts for about a second or 2 then dies. Haven't been able to get it started yet. Have spent about $1300 at this point and it still miss fires during idle, still having problems accelerating and now it stalls immediately on start up which is a problem I didn't have before I took it into the shop the first time. Any ideas?
Check the battery cables. I had the same issues with my 96 tacoma, The battery cable connection at the battery can be cranked down but still be loose. Hard to explain, doesn't make sense, but just check it out.
Hi loudcrash.
Its fuel pressure problem, change fuel pump and relay check fuel pressure valve.
good luck.is it finish

Thanks for the reply Raymond. For the hell of it, I disconnected the vacuum hose going to the Fuel Pressure Regulator. Tried starting the Tacoma again. After just a couple tries it started right up and kept running. I reconnected the vacuum hose. Turned the engine off. Started it up again and it started right up again. Drove it around town and on the freeway. Came back home. Shut it off. Starts up perfectly every time now. There's no more miss firing during idle either. Could simply disconnecting the FPR vacuum hose had simply solved my problem? Is it a sign that my Fuel Pressure Regulator is bad? There did seem to be fuel pressure in the fuel line at the end of the Regulator which would indicate that the fueld pump might not be the problem.

does it have a cold start injector seperate from the other injectors usually on the upper intake somewhere with a fuel line going to it

You do not have to replace the fuel pump at a specific mileage.
I hate to speculate without physically inspecting the vehicle, but, my best solution here & now may be the fuel pump. Now, I would not go out & buy one before you had proper diagnosis. Here is one test, but you will need to have to experience the stall again, and then test to see if you have fuel pressure at the injectors. If you have no fuel pressure, replace the pump. Fuel filter issues do not "come & go", they stay, and your car would not run properly. Also, a fuel pump failure will not set a computer code on this particular model vehicle. Hope this helps..

Check the voltage of battery with voltmeter.. It is sometimes possible that if voltage of battery drops and jump start is needed, your computer will only charge to the last voltage that was recognized which would be when jumped...Try and charge the battery if possible I would actually suggest that you have your battery tested at local auto parts store and if it is presumed in good condition ,let them charge for you to max capacity . If battery has been tested and labeled as no good replace if necessary... Oh, and first thing you should do is make sure your positive and negative battery connections are clean and tight...if this didnt fix problem please give more info on what was found when advice above was followed...Good Luck!!!!

When the timing chains stretch( and they do!) they can cause the 22re to stumble intermittently. Have trouble starting, misfiring, and even some trouble codes But first check your engine for codes You can do this by jumping TE1 and E1
If you have codes we can go from there.
You should pull your valve cover and check you timing chain tension, it should be very tight and not loose. if it is loose it is most likely time for a new chain and/ or tension and guides. I always replace them as a kit. Keep in mind that if the chain is worn it will get progressively worse until the engine will not run or the chain will wear in to the water galleys behind the water pump on the timing chain cover. sorry man.

Also forgot to mention that my truck does have about 305,000 mils on it. Which I know is well passed it's prime.
