2001 pontiac sunfire wont start

Ran out of gas, got gas and came back, cranked a couple of times(cycled on and off) engine almost started, next try will not even turn over. no click from starter, havebrand new battery and full lights, headlights interior etc, when turning the key it does not seem to cycle to starter as the lights do not dim. turning key recycles dash display as it normally does upon starting. all bells work, light on bell and key in ignition bell

    new starter , battery

  • Anonymous Mar 30, 2014

My 2001 Taurus won't crank but all lights are working fine, then I replaced the starter, but it only cranks, not turn over. I have not driven the car for two or three months. Battery seems to be fine, even tried to jump start it, only cranks. What should I do next? Thanks

I have had the exact same problem. There is an ignition lock that probably went off. There is a fuse box under the hood. The fuse that says ignition on it pull it out and put it back in. This should reset the ignition lock. Its a safety feature because the car thinks that someone was trying to tamper with it.

You mean it will turn/crank over, but wont fire.

Check for spark, most likely cause would be crank or cam angle sensor faulty.

Have you checked for obd codes? Is the check engine light illuminated?

My 2001 sunfire ran out of gas now it wont start

Smack the bottom of the gas tank a couple of times while someone tries to start it. If it starts then your pump is old and tired. Time for a new one.

2001 Pontiac Sunfire ran out of gas now won't start. Tried changing the fuel filter, and cycling the key several times, can hear the fuel pump running. Also could get to start with spraying fuel into air...

The fuel in the fuel tank also cools the pump during operation. The pump could have heated up internally, causing it to fail. I would recommend checking the fuel pressure with a gauge and be sure the fuel system is pressurized and not low. A fuel pump can still run and be heard, but at the same time, it also may not provide enough critical pressure to the fuel rail and injectors.

2001 Pontiac Sunfire automatic engine may start

You might want to have it checked to see if you have fuel pressure or see if there is spark going thru to your spark plug.If everything is ok it might be your timing belt needs replacing

sometimes when you run out of gas your fuel pump is dry ,you need to put lots of gas in then turn your key to the on position with out turning over the engine ,you should be able to hear your fuel pump cycle if it still wont start ,pump the accelerator pedal a couple of times then try and start it

Look for the crash sensor that shuts off the fuel pump, usually located in a hard to reach spot in the trunk, push to reset it. Check your owners manual, it will tell you where if you can't locate it by sight.
