These should NOT be cleaned. They cannot be repaired, Just disconnect negative battery cable, unplug maf sensor and replace it with the new one. Just need flat head screwdriver.

1999 chevy astro van 4.3L. Starts immedeatly then stalls. Fuel is good. only code was PO101 MAF. Replaced MAF sensor with no change. Is there a sensor i am missing that will cause stall?

Diagnostic Aids
Check for the following conditions:
• A skewed or stuck TP sensor. A problem with the TP sensor or TP sensor circuit can cause the VCM to incorrectly calculate the predicted mass air flow value. Observe the throttle angle with the throttle closed. If the throttle angle reading is not 0%, check for the following conditions:
- The throttle plate is sticking or excessive deposits on the throttle plate or the throttle bore
- The TP sensor signal circuit shorted to voltage
- A poor connection or high resistance in the TP sensor ground circuit.
• A misrouted harness. Inspect the MAF sensor harness in order to ensure that it is not routed too close to high voltage wires such as spark plug leads.
• A damaged harness. Inspect the wiring harness for damage. If the harness appears to be OK, observe the scan tool while moving the connectors and the wiring harnesses related to the MAF sensor. A change in the display indicates the location of the fault.
• A plugged intake air duct or dirty air filter element. A wide open throttle acceleration from a stop should cause the mass air flow displayed on a scan tool to increase from about 4-7 gm/s at idle to 100 gm/s or more at the time of the 1-2 shift. If not, check for a restriction.

Circuit Description
The mass air flow (MAF) sensor is an air flow meter. The control module supplies the MAF sensor a signal circuit. An ignition positive voltage circuit and a ground circuit are supplied to the MAF sensor by independent circuits. The MAF sensor heats a wire element, or grid, within the MAF sensor in order to maintain a calculated temperature. As inlet air flows across and cools the grid, the MAF sensor increases current flow to the grid in order to maintain the constant grid temperature. The MAF sensor converts the grid current flow into a frequency signal. The control module converts the MAF signal frequency into a grams per second value. During low air flow rates, such as at engine idle, the MAF sensor produces a low frequency signal. During high air flow rates, such as at wide open throttle-road load, the MAF sensor increases the frequency signal. The control module monitors the MAF sensor signal frequency in order to calculate the flow and mass of the air entering the engine.
The VCM monitors the MAF sensor air flow rate and compares this signal to a VCM calculated air flow rate. The calculated air flow is based on engine speed and barometric pressure. The VCM uses the MAP sensor in order to determine the barometric pressure when the ignition key is turned ON but before the engine is cranking or running. This DTC will be set if the MAF sensor signal airflow rate does not match the air flow rate calculated by the VCM.

I have a Buick lasabre 3800 and on my mass airflow sensor one wire is clean and one lookes burnt . Would that cause my car to act up?

Yes, a dirty or bad mass airflow sensor can cause a car to run badly. I had a 1999 Mazda Protege that had this problem. You can get a can of mass airflow sensor cleaner from an auto parts store. Be careful to hold the can a few inches away from the wires so as not to break anything. Mass Airflow Sensors are fragile. Let it dry before putting it back in the car. If your car has the check engine light on, they can check the code for your as well. You could go to Autozone, Advanced Auto Parts, Oreilly's, etc. CRC Mass Air Flow MAF Sensor Cleaner Instructional Video

P0103 code. I cleaned maf still have same code and stalls. I disconnect maf still stalls. I changed it one year ago code come back after 4 weeks. I have 2000 Hyundai Elantra.

the ecm may be bad,
P0103 OBD-II Trouble Code Technical Description Mass Air Flow (MAF) Circuit High Input What does that mean? Basically this means that there is a problem with the Mass Air Flow High (MAF) sensor or circuit. A more technical description would be that the MAF circuit had higher than expected voltage (air flow). Other MAF sensor circuit DTC trouble codes are P0100, P0101, P0102, and P0104. Symptoms You will likely not notice any serious drivability problems, although there may be symptoms such as a general decrease in power or sluggishness. Causes A code P0103 may mean that one or more of the following has happened: The MAF may be disconnected, or a wiring connection may be bad The MAF sensor may be damaged The vehicle computer may be faulty (very rare) Possible Solutions The simplest thing to do is to reset the code and see if it comes back. Then start with the cheapest, easiest repair procedures: Verify that the Mass Air Flow Sensor wiring is connected properly and that there are no broken / frayed wires. Inspect for any air leaks near the MAF sensor. Take the MAF out and clean it using a spray cleaner such as brake cleaner or electrical contact cleaner. Be gentle with the sensor. Check the voltage of the MAF sensor (refer to a repair manual for vehicle specific information) Replace the MAF sensor. Check Engine light came on (2001 E320 with just 20,000 miles on it). After connecting the scanner, the code showed P0 170 and P0 173 which I was told was a Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor problem. I...

Those codes do appear to deal with the mass airflow sensor. The MAF sensor is probably the "hot wire" type where a thin wire is suspended inside the body of the sensor and is heated with electrical current. The amount of air passing over the wire is directly proportional to the resistance of the wire and that resistance data is calculated. The MAF sensor, by itself, cannot determine the air mass supplied to the intake plenum. One or more other sensors are used in conjunction to equate these values. The oxygen sensor(s), Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor, the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensors may all play a part in this fault reading.

There are reliable methods to test the MAF sensor. One well takled about method is to tap the MAF sharply with a screwdriver handle while the engine is running. If the engine dies, the MAF is faulty. This can detect a physical defect in the wire and a few other things but do do assume that, after repeated blows to the MAF with your dead blow hammer for good measure, that the MAF is at 100%. I will research some text on testing these sensors on that particular model and post links to any information and diagnostic data I find.
