Yesterday the shifter cable came off the transmission.. I put it back on but now I cannot get the key to come out of the ignition. How do I reset the shift interlock to release the key?

SOURCE: I have a 1999 chrysler concord and the shift cable

Cable is shot. Change the shift cable (cable from shifter to transmission) Also spray some WD40 on the shift linkage on the trans and work it back and forth to loosen it up before you put the new cable on. Good luck

This is called the limp mode. It means that you have a transmission problem. It goes into limp mode to protect the transmission from total failure. You need to take it to a transmission shop to perform a diagnosic test to see if it needs repair or replace

SOURCE: Key stuck in the ignition. Position indicator

Hi there,
try turning the wheel to the right/left while turning the key in the ignition. You have to apply some force. Your car is probably outliving its road life.

Have the EXACT same problem. 2005 Pt Cruiser w about 88,000 miles. Became hard to shift when cold and then bam ....something broke. Moves freely. I know I'm going to get screwed on this... what should it cost to have it fixed. The guy at a shop close by (figured close to make towing easier) started into this 'its a dealer only part and blah blah...at least an hour .... " He's going to send an estimate tomorrow. How do I get a stuck key out of an ignition lock cylinder on a 2006 chevy impala 3.9 motor

Does it go into the lock position ? Will the shifter go into the park position ? Is it a automatic transmission ?
Electronic Park Lock (EPL)/Ignition Lock Cylinder Control Actuator: If the vehicle is equipped with automatic transmission and a floor mounted console gear shift, it has an ignition lock cylinder control actuator system in the steering column. The ignition lock cylinder control actuator purpose is to prevent the ignition key from being turned to the OFF position when the transmission is in any position other than PARK and the vehicle may still be moving. The column ignition lock system consists of an ignition lock cylinder control actuator, and a park position switch that is located in the automatic transmission shift lock control switch. The ignition lock cylinder control actuator contains a pin that is spring loaded to mechanically prevent the ignition key cylinder from being turned to the lock position when the vehicle transmission is not in the PARK position. If vehicle power is lost, and/or the transmission is not in the PARK position the operator will not be able to turn the ignition key to the lock position and will not be able to remove the ignition key from the column.
There should be a hole in the bottom of plastic steering cover or a rubber cover that comes out . you can stick your finger up there an there is a button you push that will allow you to take out the key !

I have a 95 camaro, I put the key in ignition and it will not turn the ignition. It's like it's stuck. Replaced the ignition module and still cannot turn ignition. Help!

the ignition module (ignition switch on top of the steering column) normally doesn't get stuck.

things you can try:
steering wheel lock: (the pin gets a "burr" on it and locks everything up) wiggle steering wheel back and forth while trying to turn key.

transmission lock (parking on an incline will jam up the interlock)
push the shifter farther into park while trying to turn the key, or wiggle shifter

Ignition Lock Cylinder Control Actuator
If the vehicle is equipped with a floor mounted console gear shifter, it has a ignition lock cylinder control actuator system in the steering column as an added safety feature. The ignition lock cylinder control actuators purpose is to prevent the steering wheel from being locked when the transmission is in gear and the vehicle may still be moving. The column ignition lock system consists of a ignition lock cylinder control acutator, and a park position switch that is located in the A/T shift lock control switch. The ignition lock cylinder control acutator contains a pin that is spring loaded out to mechanically prevent the ignition key cylinder from being turned to the lock position when vehicle transmission is not in the Park position. If vehicle power is lost, and/or the transmission is not in the Park position the operator will not be able to turn the ignition key to the lock position and will not be able to remove the ignition key from the column.

Ignition key gets stuck and car won't start

you might need to replace ignition key cylinder assy and replace current key, now, sometimes if this is a automatic transmission it might have problem with shifter interlock cable try moving shifter from park to first and back to park and try removing key again, but if key gets stuck and car won't start, does the key turns? does the engine cranks? are you using the correct key?

2004 Camry ignition gets stuck on "on"

To be quite frank, a little further diagnosis on the part of the dealer will rectify this condition, but,
try this:
When the key will not come out, try pushing the shifter forwards towards the park position. If the key comes out then, it just may be an adjustment at the shifter cable.
