I have a 2002 Honda Civic and the speedometer, odometer, radio, and gauges shut off then on while driving. This continued for about 40 miles then the car simply shut off. I took the car to the mechanic and he said it was the battery so i just got a new one and it worked fine until I made it about 200 miles on the road and the car is repeating the same things. Luckily I made to my friends house but am still 100 miles from my house. So if it isn't the battery because it is brand new, what is the issue? I am thinking it is either a fuse or battery terminal issues. Anyone?

If all the connection and power supplies to instrument cluster are ok,I suspect that the speedometer or instrument cluster is faulty but before you replace it, make sure the gear inside the transmission that drives the VSS is in good.

check the connection from speedometer to transaxle. Often this becomes loose, especially the transaxle side. Also 92 was a first year model and have heard many wacky problems.

SOURCE: Car speedo & odometer sometimes work OK, other times not at all.

Most likely a speed sensor is going bad (most cars and truck do not use mechanical speedometer cables anymore) most sensors are located near the differential in rwd cars or near the drive shaft on the transmission. Best bet is to get a Haynes manual for your car to help locate the speed sensor. Remove it and take it to the auto parts store so you can visually compare it to the replacement. Install the new speed sensor and it should restore your speedometer and odometer.

the only thing that is related is the d4/rough gear changing
speed/ rpm malfunction is caused by your speed sensor on the trani (common problem) change it

More info needed. Is this a hatch back, sedan, or CRX? Is the odometer mechanical [old style] or digital [LCD numbers] The vehicle speed sensor [located behind the speedometer in the instrument cluster] drives both the speedometer and the odometer [mileage meter]. It sounds like an electric problem in the instrument cluster. Remove the instrument cluster and take it to your local speedometer repair shop. Look in the yellow pages for them. Or simply buy and install a used instrument cluster from a junk yard.

98 honda civic speedometer not working. it will jump around and then settle at 20.
It's a common problem with the civic's, the speedo is bad, you can try findind one in the bone yard but it may be bad to, the dealer is expensive, In my 95 civic I turn on my tom tom and it has the speed on it, all the other gauges work fine, the odometer will work fine, just the speedo.

if speedometer and odometer are not working, chances are that the speed sensor is bad and stopped working. find vehicle speed sensor on transmission, the connection may be corroded or the sensor itself is bad. good-day !!

Check the main fuses under the hood. There are several large ones there. A loose connection on one of them could have caused the sudden, complete electrical failure you described. If it is a loose connection, it would certainly explain why it "came back to life" by itself.

Also, might you possibly have any sort of aftermarket security system that has an immobilizer feature on it? While I wouldn't expect this to disable the entire car including the radio, if it were incorrectly installed I suppose it could.

My 1996 Honda civic speedometer,and odometer do not work at all. The tach works. Occasionally the speedometer works normally but for no discernable reason. No check engine light accompanies this problem.
Your cars speedometer has a broken or frayed cable replace it the Tach is separate from the speedometer/odometer and will work on its own
