It idles so high when the car is running that when i turn it off, it continues to try and run even after the key is out of the ignition. When i'm driving and its idling too high i can tap the accelerator and then the high idling stops for a second or two but goes right back.

I have a 4 door. My car does the same thing, Except I can adjust the idle so that it will go to low and then I will have to turn on the rear defrost to keep it going. So either I am idleing to high or to low.
I have a corolla 1997. Runs good but it is idling too high, causing to use too much gas. I noticed that reves goe down, close to normal, if I stop the AC but the minute i crank the AC on, reves go back up. Also, sometimes, while idling at traffic lights, it will go down very severely for a second or two, as if it was to cut off, then it goes back up to high idling.
Any clues that might help me troubleshoot it? Thanks!!
Timing is an issue if you have been messing with it. But if your in your engine I'm not sure it is an issue in this case.
I would check vacuum lines Mine would run wild when I forgot to put the big Vacuum hose on the carb. These cars have a bunch of hoses and two that go off to the right side of the Air Cleaner towards the valve cover area. Check these hoses with the filter off One hooks up to the bottom of the filter the other to the valve cover. You have to put the filter on and the hose at the same time to get on right.
anything you have done to it recently? either way check and make sure that all your vacuum lines are properly working and that there are no leaks...something to get you started.
Take your distributor cap of on this model, turn the rotor against the spring action (vacuum advance) if it does not return in the normal position, replace distributor.
It is a problem with this model.
