There's a switch on the brake pedal arm that needs adjustment or replacement.
Hope this helps.

The brake lights don't light up or the taillights don't light up? the brake lights are brighter than the tailights so the tailights won't show up whenbrakes are applied. if no lights work when brakes are applied then check for a bad ground at the light assembly.

SOURCE: How do you replace the third brake light on a 2001

remove the trim on the trunk then there are three bolts 10 mm remove those then push up the third brake light and there you go the easiest light to change on a beetle. you will need a phillips to unscrew the trim on the trunk lid the bolts are in the pull down parts. then pull real hard to get the trim out of the clip holders

SOURCE: 2003 VW BEETLE LEFT BRAKE LIGHT DOES NOT WORK WHEN

These cars were very well known to have bad grounds at the tail lamps. I would check the grounds to be sure they are still viable and check the wires to the tail lamps to be sure they haven't corroded.

2001 VW Beetle. Both the Brake and Tail lights are not working. Third brake light works though.

First make sure that the bulbs are ok. Do the emergency lights work? If so , then the wiring for the brake lights are ok. That means that the brake light problem could be the brake light switch. If they do not work, then a wiring connector could be the problem.

Brake light stays on with beeping sound

Check & replace if necessary the brake pedal switch placed above pedals on the support.

The brake pedal switch on a 2001 VW Beetle is placed above pedals on the support.

1. Remove the cover panel above the driver's side foot well...

2. Locate old switch, push in brake pedal, and twist switch body to remove...

tdisline_604.jpg
3. Unplug 4 pin connector from old switch and plug into new switch (it only goes one way...don't force it!). Insert new switch into frame and depress brake petal. You should turn it until it locks into place and is positioned like the original.

4. Start Bug. Press the brake pedal once or twice and the EPC light should go out ...

tdisline_606.jpg
5. If it looks like that... great! Replace the cover over the foot well and you are done! If not, check the 4 pin connection and make sure it is fully seated in the switch. Also check to see if you can hear the switch engage when you press the brake pedal ... if not, you will need to remove the switch and adjust the push rod. The rod will move in and out for adjustment. Check to see if the brake lights come on when you press the brake pedal as well!

How do you replace the rear brake light for a 2001 VW beetle?

hi,
you will need to remove the tail lamp.
standing behind the vehicle, with the trunk open , inside on the affected side you will see a small plastic cover, remove this and under neath is a nut. remove the nut. now you have to gently prise the tail lamp out(taking care with paint work). start at the outside of the lamp. once removed, changing the bulb is straight foward. you will see the lugs for refitting the lamp.

My tail lights in my 2002 VW Beetle keep going out. I've tried bulbs from Walmart, and VW OEM parts, and still have the same problem. Do I need to replace the connectors or the wiring???

The brake light switch has been recalled on New Beetles. I've replaced mine twice on my 2001. I was reimbursed by VW both times. I just had my regular mechanic fix it and turned in the paperwork. You can take it to the dealer and they should cover it, but I hate going to dealers because they always try to say something else is wrong with the car.
