when it starts it will run for like twenty seconds fine then it sounds like a bolt loose in the motor then dies then you can start it right up and it does it again just didnt know if i should just chalk it up as a blown motor and start over.

SOURCE: how to change a blown head gasket on a mitsubishi 4x4 4d56

My advice to you if you have no experience you should have an auto tech handle this because even us as tech sometimes forget about things and no matter how much I guide you through this, It's very hard but yet again I'm trying to look out for you. lets just say something goes wrong then you will have to pay tow truck fee and it will be double. just shop around but you don't have to take my advice I'm just trying to help. Have a nice day buddy.

SOURCE: crankshaft position sensor location

Hello. One way to check if it is working is when you try to start the car does the needle move on you tac? If not then your crank sensor is more then likely the problem. It is located on the backside of the engine under the intake manifold. If is in about the center of the block. There will be a 10mm bolt holding the sensor in. If you decide to change it yourself (not to terrible of a job) unplug the sensor, remove the bolt and spin it back and forth slightly while pulling it out. It may be stoburn and you might have to work at it for a little bit (not a done of room) but it will come. When it's out the sensor will be shaped kind of like an L. I have changed a few of these over time and they can be a little stoburn. To install just reverse the process.

I just bought a 1996 mitsubishi eclipse 2.0 non turbo and as i was driving i got 8 miles out of the town and it just started to die and finaly it died and i pulled over and it could not get started...

Hopefully you bought this from a reputable Dealer. If not I hope its still under warranty from where ever you bought it from.
If neither apply then regardless of whether its a cracked head or a bent valve the head has to be removed. Once its removed then they can easily see if it was a bent valve or the head cracked, or a bad head gasket. Either way this is big money.
My heart goes out to you. Good luck

Thermostat issues on 99 eclipse non turbo

Well the antifreeze has to go somewhere so its either going out onto the ground via hose or gasket, or it can get into you oil system via gasket or out the tailpipe via gasket. Since you said you cant smell it I would look for a puddle on the ground or in the oil. But since you said its knocking i would have to say head gasket is leaking antifreeze into the oil.... Pull out your engine oil dipstick and see if its white/foamy, if it is its the headgasket/head issue.
