04 ram will not shift past 35 mph

Hi, My dodge ram will not shift after it gets to around 30mph, when it reaches that speed at acts as if i put it into neutral. If i slow to under that, the transmission kicks in until 30mph again. If i keep in in 2nd it will go passed 30mph until i shift into drive then its like i put into neutral again. (it is an automatic, with the 4.7L)

Ive changed the filter and yes, i used the correct fluid,

  • Neobie Jun 13, 2012

I checked codes, started with code p0300, truck has sat for some time, so i reset all the codes, drove it around for about 30-45, still would not shift passed 30 mph, check engine light came, when i got home I check the codes and got P0700, and nothing else. One thing i noticed, it feels like it is taking a long time to shift from 1st to 2nd also, and its not consistant.

First off, a scan tool bought from a auto parts store will not give you the info needed from your trans, yes it could be a shift sensor that is in your throttle body in your trans, could be a stuck valve in the throttle body, the trans could be in limp mode, for a code to be set, the problem has to happen 3 times before a code to be set

It may not be a transmission problem. have you checked for fault codes to make sure it is not in limp mode? limp mode keeps vehicle from accelerating properly because the ECM has put the system at a limited setting to keep the engine running but not to its full potential.

p0700 is a trans code. will your scan tool access the trans module? if so it will be more specific to the problem that is setting the p0700 in the ECM. since it has set a p0700, the problem could be as simple as a shift solenoid. it also could be a TCM or a bad clutch pack or worn bands in trans not catching/ slipping.

Sounds like dirt in the transmission may be causing the shift points to not work properly.
Is this the problem you are having?
If it is, then I would say that one should have the fluid changed out of the transmission at a local shop.

If this does not solve the problem, then the solution may be a rebuild of the transmission.

Switching gears from 1st to 2nd

there is a computer that controls your rpm gauge, your speedo, and your shift. check that and your speed sensor. the sensor is faster and easier.

How many times does a transmission supposed to shift starting from drive in a 1988 dodge ram with a 318 motor

Depends if you have a regular 3 speed automatic, or a 3 speed with overdrive.
Put it in drive, it will start out in first gear, then shift into second at about 15 MPH, into third at about 30-35 MPH. With overdrive, fourth gear will kick in at about 45-55MPH.

Dodge charger wont go over 35 mph

I have a 2007 Dodge Charger won't go over 35-40 mph and once you get up to that speed it jumps back and forth and when you start it and put it in gear to go it jumps real hard. My mechanic and a transmission specialist said it was a bad tranny I bought a used tranny and the used one wouldn't even shift into gear so now putting another tranny and another computer system in it. Does anyone know anything else it could be I'm so tired of this vehicle
