I will try and simplify the problem. I have an oil leak, which I traced up the back of the engine to the cylinder head area. When I removed the top plastic cover on top of the coil packs I found oil in every recess to the rear coil packs. The crankcase breather pipe was also off. The source of the leak is not evident, but it is definetely above the cylinder head gasket area.
Most likely it is the breather tube and/or the oil trap box (integrated into the oil filter housing). if the box is plugged or the diaphragm is torn the box will send oil to the top of the engine via the hose.
do you also have a high pitched whistling noise?
Volvo has extended the warranty for the oil trap box (filter housing) to 120k miles and/or 10 years.
Hi I've contacted Volvo today and they denied the recall for this problem.

Most likeley the valve cover and or intake gasket, could also be coming from the breather.. The best way is to clean it very good and then run it and check where it is coming from.. Oil can be very deceiving, when it is hot, it travels far..

be very careful there are plastic clips i belive you must pull them either down or straight out get a putty knife behind there and look with a flashlight,,, also instead of remove the b piller you can buy some 14 Gage solid cooper wire and push it thru the drain to clear the blockage please rate -jeff

You are going to have to remove the intake filter, figure out which one of 13 oil traps you have, and replace it with a new one, as well as the associated hoses for the PCV system. Make sure you have an intake gasket before you go back together.

The smoke coming from the valve cover and dipstick is called blowby. It is combustion gases the have passes by the piston rings . A small amount of blowby is normal on all engines. The PCV system(Positve Crankcase Ventilation)pulls the gases out and directs them back into the egine to be burnt again. I would first check the PCV system to make sure it is working proper. Also a compression test of the engine will tell you which cylinder is not sealing proper. If the compression test is ok, a leak down check of the cylinders will determine if the engine is wore out.

It may be the gromet for the PCV valve or it could be the spark plug rubber seal located in the valve cover if it is the type of engine that has the wires and spark plugs that go down through the valve cover, if this is the case buy a valve cover gasket with the rubber gromets that are located around the base of the hole where spark plugs fit through and install.
